Every industry has its ruling trade association and for the fashion world, that’s the CFDA, or the Council of Fashion Designers of America. It just had its annual gala, and aging boldly women were in the spotlight in a big way.
Eileen Fisher, who’s about to turn 69, was honored with a Positive Change Award, reflecting her dedication to sustainability in an industry that’s increasingly under scrutiny for its eco practices. Eileen’s company is one of the largest women’s fashion companies to be certified as a B Corporation, having met high criteria for social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. It also happens to be the largest B Corp in the state of New York, as it creates fashions that are sold at 65 Eileen Fisher stores and over 1000 department stores. Also honored was Carine Roitfeld, 64, a French woman who has been known for defining style trends for decades. The recipient of the CFDA’s Founder’s Award, she helmed Vogue Paris for a decade with fierce creativity and vision and then went on to create biannual publications, CR Fashion Book and CR Mens, that were a must-have among the fashion community. She and her son launched CR Studio, a production house working with everyone from Chanel to Kanye’s Yeezy line. She has also created a fragrance.

Someone who’s a bit more of a household name—Jennifer Lopez, or JLo, who’s turning 50 this summer—snagged a Fashion Icon award. Sure, she’s well known for acting, singing, and dancing, but who can forget her turn in that “cut down to there and up to there,” gravity-defying green Versace dress to the Grammy Awards in 2000? She’s been shaking up the fashion world ever since.
