Here’s a brilliant idea: A gallery that is dedicated to showcasing the work of artists over 60, who are too often overlooked by mainstream forums. Think about it: There’s loads of excitement about young artists beginning their career, but those reaching retirement age—or well into it—are frequently ignored.
The Carter Burden Gallery in NYC’s art-centric Chelsea neighborhood helps level the playing field. Its mission is to support the creativity and talent that artists of a certain age possess, whether they are just starting to create or have been doing so for years. Gallery Director Marlena Vaccaro has said, ““If, by the time you’re 40, you haven’t demonstrated earning power in terms of sales, it’s hard to get the attention of a big gallery.” Her space is a haven where painting, photography, sculpture, prints and other work by the 60-plus set can be seen in all its glory.
The Gallery is part of the Carter Burden Network, an organization that promotes the well-being of seniors 60 and older through services, advocacy, and arts and culture programs. What a thing of beauty!
