Trip Description
A Wine-Centered Adventure Curated by Locals
Cape Town, South Africa is consistently described as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It sits above a frothy blue sea and a ring of white beaches with views out to the famous Tabletop mountain, which often can be seen with a layer of comely clouds clinging to its top.
REMEMBER: We offer easy interest-free monthly payments to make our trips more accessible.
That alone would make it worth a NextTribe trip. But we can offer you something even better. Two NextTribe women–born and raised in Capetown–have put together a luxurious, cultural itinerary filled with off-the-tourist-track experiences and sights that locals treasure. One of our guides has spent her career in high-end hospitality (five-star hotels and the like) and knows how to make sure we have the trip of a lifetime.
Who wouldn’t want to go to a new destination with guides who can take you to the places other visitors know nothing about? Swimming in tidal pools on quiet beaches; meeting penguins away from the crowds; riding a sidecar along the area’s most scenic highway; receiving red-carpet treatment from restaurants and shops throughout the trip because our guides know the coolest entrepreneurs in town.

April is a lovely time to be in Cape Town, as its their fall season. We’ll be staying in homes and hotels in three different parts of the region–the city, the Cape Point beaches and the stunning wine country–with the best assortment of local food AND a hand-picked selection of the finest South African wines. One of our guides is a sommelier, well-versed in the local grapes, and everyday we’ll be tasting wines from different regions. We promise you’ll never experience South Africa in a more authentic way.
Please note that this is a sample itinerary. Accommodations and activities may change but we will always replace them with something of equal or better value.
5 Reasons We Love This Trip
- The insider ticket that our guides are giving us, choosing from all the people, places and experiences they know so that we can have an exclusive look at the best of the region.
- The natural wonders that we’ll be soaking in. Our guides know the perfect hikes that will give us the best views of Table Mountain, the 12 Apostles and other landscape features. They know the best beaches and scenic spots. We’ll revel in vineyards, lavender fields and camphor forests.
- Delicious meals and lovely wines.– We’ll be eating well–from unpretentious seafood houses to the regal Mount Nelson Hotel for afternoon tea to a barbecue (a.k.a. “braai”) on the lawn of a rolling vineyard. We’ll also be sampling different South African wines every day.
- Cultural touchstones. We’ll learn about South Africa’s history (starting with a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served his time) and its fascinating artistic legacy, including the colorful Bokaap neighborhood and galleries highlighting the work of women artists.
- The women we’ll befriend along the way. Not just our fellow travelers, but also local South African women who are friends our our guides. It’s the ideal way to get truly connected to a destination.

Sample Itinerary
TUESDAY, April 14th: Welcome to Cape Town
Today we’ll get to know each other and start to learn about South African wines at our base in the Camp Bay area. Those who arrive a little early at the hotel will have time to enjoy a stroll on the beach at Camps Bay..
This evening, you will enjoy the sunset while dining on the chic lawn and get to know each other while feasting our eyes on the night sky, which looks different in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ll get to know the Southern Cross and a new perspective on the Milky Way.
During dinner, you will get a broad overview of wines in South Africa.
WEDNESDAY, April 15th: Table Mountain and Classic Wine Estate
After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit Signal Hill and get oriented to glorious Cape Town. Then it’s off to the most iconic feature of Cape Town–Table Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll take a cable car since the climb can be difficult, and then take in the view from the top. .
Following a light lunch, we’ll head to the oldest wine estate in South Africa, Groot Constantia, for a walkabout (and some sips of course)..
We’ll toast the end of the day with “sundowners,” (local lingo for drinks at sunset) and next head to a local favorite, The Codfather, for a sumptuous seafood feast.
Featured wine for the day: Constantia region
THURSDAY, April 16th: Robben Island and Bokaap
We’ll start the day with a visit to a dazzling apartment the looks out on the city harbor (we know how much NextTribers love to see inside the homes of other women when they travel).
Then we jump on a ferry to Robben Island, a must-see part of South African and world history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is where Nelson Mandela spent five of his 27 years in prison. .
We’ll continue the day in the Bokaap neighborhood, which is situated on the slopes bove the city center. It’s a former racially segregated area, characterized by brightly painted houses and cobblestone streets that date back to the 18th century. We’ll get to meet women from the neighborhood and hear about their lives over a festive dinner..
Featured wine for the day: A mystery. Got to have some surprises!
FRIDAY, April 17th: Hiking, Tidal Pools, High Tea and Art
In the morning, we’ll take a hike along the 12 Apostles Mountain Range, followed by an “aquasize” class with local women our age that is conducted in a tidal pool. .
We’ll have High Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel, a handsome pink structure that dates back to 1899. With its large selection of teas from around the world and a lavish array of sweet and savory delicacies, “tea at the Nellie” is a much-loved Cape Town tradition. .
Before dinner at one of the city’s finest restaurants, we’ll get a private tour of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art, which recognizes the diverse and complicated cultural heritage here and also the resilience of the people.
Featured wine for the day: Elgin region
SATURDAY, April 18th: Farmer's Market and Design Market
We’ll spend the morning exploring some of Cape Town’s extraordinary beaches, then head to the nearby community market, which is a sight to behold, according to our guides. The location overlooks Granger Bay, with dolphins playing down below. We’ll get to stroll on our own through the many vendors to experience the best of South African food and produce–from fresh crushed juices to chakalaka, a spicy vegetable relish. There are also continental dishes, such as Belgian waffles, dim sum and bao. .
We’ll have plenty of time to explore the waterfront before making our way to another market, called the Watershed, which is a vibrant craft and design space bursting with fresh fashion, art and flavor.
Dinner is in the Old Biscuit Mill complex, the home of some of South Africa’s finest and most celebrated dining establishments.
Featured wine for the day: Swartland region
SUNDAY, April 19th: Picnic and concert
We’ll have a lot of free time today, when you’ll be able to rest on the sundeck or swim in a nearby tidal pool or explore the local beaches.
Later in the day, we’ll follow many locals to a favorite spot–the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site–for a picnic and al fresco concert.
Featured wine activity for the day–a blind tasting!
MONDAY, April 20th: Sidecar Drive to the Cape of Good Hope
We’ll move from our Camp Bay home to Cape Point and we’ll get there in style. We’ll be riding in sidecars along one of the most breathtaking roads in the country–Chapman’s Peak Drive. The ride allows passengers to enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the dramatic cliffs while feeling the fresh sea breeze.
After a traditional fish and chips lunch along the way, we’ll go to a viewing spot on the Cape of Good Hope that is known as the “southern-most tip of Africa.” Cape Point is a stunning natural reserve and we’ll take a funicular ride to the top of Cape Point to get breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes.
This Cape Point area is home to endangered African penguins, but we’ll avoid the penguin beach crowded with tourists. Instead our guides will give us the opportunity for a more low-key encounter with a colony.
Featured wine for the day: Cape Point region
TUESDAY, April 21st: Beach Day
Today we’ll have the chance to explore other famous Cape Town beaches, these bordering the bay rather than the Atlantic beaches we saw at Camps Bay. We can also have a wander around the charming community of Simonstown.
Those who want a little extra excitement can book a horseback ride on Noordhoek Beach (not included). Dinner is at a gorgeous waterfront restaurant.
Featured wine for the day: Hemel en Aarde region
WEDNESDAY, April 22nd: On to Wine Country
We’ll leave our Cape Point base to make our way to the rolling hills covered in vineyards of South Africa’s famous Cape Winelands. This is a lush green land of rivers and forests and, of course, meticulous rows of grapes.
Our first stop is Stellenbosch, where Stellenbosch mountain dominates the landscape. We’ll visit a 300-year-old camphor forest for a picnic lunch, then we’ll head to the spectacular Rupert Museum, a family-owned gallery that showcases a collection of exquisit portraits and wall-sized murals depicting scenes from every region of South Africa.
We’ll have a wine tasting overlooking the wonderful landscape at Delaire Graff, considered the most prestigious wineries in Africa. One of our guide’s friends will set us up with an exclusive experience in this drool-worthy setting.
Then it’s over Helshgoote Pass and on to the town of Boschendal, where we’ll have time for horse riding or relaxing under the oaks.
Featured wine for the day: Stellenbosch region
THURSDAY, April 23rd: Lavender and South African Barbecue
The day begins with a visit to Babylonstoren, one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, set at the foot of Simonsberg in the Franschhoek wine valley. The fruit and vegetable garden is a thing of beauty, right out of Versailles.
After a bountiful lunch, we’ll take the wine tram through the vineyards and the Grand Provence lavender fields. Again, expect scenery as verdant and stunning as anything found in France.
We’ll end the day with a traditional “braai,” a South African barbecue. First we’ll pick our cut of meet from a local butcher shop, and then after the meat is marinaded South African style, we’ll pop the cuts on a grill. (For those who aren’t meat eaters, we’ll have other options.) It will be a relaxed and authentic way to spend our last night in the Cape Town region.
Featured wine for the day: Franschhoek region
FRIDAY, April 24th: Farewell or Off to the Safari
Those of us who have chosen to extend our trip with a safari in Kruger National Park will leave early for the airport.
Those staying on will have the chance to see a fascinating sculpture garden. Then, you’ll be taken to the airport for your international flight, which usually leaves in the evening.
Bon Voyage!!
Please note that this is a sample itinerary. Accommodations and activities may change but we will always replace them with something of equal or better value.

Our travelers love us (yay!)

Colleen M., California
What I love about the NextTribe trips is that there is so much camaraderie of other women that are like you, and then the fabulous things that the organizers puts together to give you that viewpoint, it’s awesome.
”
Courtney M., Texas
What I love about NextTribe trips is that you get the experience from an insider’s perspective—someone that has ties to the community and focused on building relationships from the start. I’ve been on a trip with another women’s travel group that dropped a guide in, not personally knowing anything about the locale, traditions, or culture. She was there to make sure you showed up on time, got on the bus, etc. With NextTribe, you feel like you’re having a personalized experience with your best girlfriends.
”
Donna B., Washington
I didn't know anyone going on the trip but that didn't stop me from signing up. I have learned that some of my life's greatest adventures have come from taking a risk and jumping in feet first. So glad I did with NextTribe! I may not have known anybody at the start, but now I feel like I know everybody.
”
Connie B., Pennsylvania
I love to meet and interact with strong, mature women from across the country as we learn together.
”
Leslie M., Georgia
I always come by myself on NextTribe trips because I like to meet super fun and interesting women. We're always doing fun and interesting things in great cities that you couldn't do on your own because you wouldn't know the people or places or the insiders.
”
Teresa S., Kentucky
NextTribe fills the need I have to travel with older interesting women who are curious about the world and want to share the journey.

Frequently asked questions
What’s different about your trips?
We curate trips specifically for curious, engaged women over 45. You’re pretty well assured that your fellow travelers will be a lot like you–since you’ve all responded to the idea of “aging boldly.”. That means built-in compatibility in your small group, including the woman who is leading the adventure.. In addition to specializing in group travel for people who don’t normally like group travel, we also pride ourselves on creating experiences that allow you to interact with local women or get deeper into the culture than you would if you planned the trip yourself.
Where do you go?
We have a wide range of weekend jaunts here in the U.S. for those who want a quick getaway. We also love taking women to Mexico, where founder Jeannie Ralston used to live. We’re always talking about pushing boundaries, and we’re doing that in the geographic sense too. For those with more time, we offer trips all over Europe, to India, Vietnam, Peru (for a hike on the inca Trail to Machu Picchu). Soon, our travelers will be getting passport stamps in even more countries on six continents. Be saving those frequent flier miles!
What do you mean by transformational travel?
NextTribe is affiliated with the Transformational Travel Council, an international group of travel professionals dedicated to making the world a better place, one trip and one traveler at a time. We recognize that travelers, especially post-pandemic, are looking for more than just a date and a destination. They can shop for that anywhere online. Our community honors the intention behind a traveler’s investment in a trip. Our travelers want to have fun (we do too!) and to travel with a sense of purpose and belonging. That’s why we go to great lengths to provide ways for women to self-select by reading the articles in our magazine and the content of our website. If you like what you see, you’re likely to be a NextTribe traveler, and we look forward to seeing you on a trip soon!
What if I travel solo?
If you really prefer to book your travel yourself and go it alone, we applaud you. That’s brave and bold and we would never try to talk you out of it. But our trips are designed so that even a woman who’s used to traveling alone, or someone shy about meeting new people, will feel comfortable in our group. Our trip leaders are there to “read the room” and make sure everyone feels included and respected.
What if I don’t like group travel?
We don’t either! Not the way most groups do it. If you feel like doing what the group is doing, great! Join us for dinner or just some of the activities. All the benefits of solo travel and the comfort of being with a group. Our groups are small (normally around 12 to 14 women) and in most situations, you are free to opt out of an activity. We figure you’re grown-ass women who know what’s best for you.
What’s the price range of your trips?
We are committed to providing what we call “affordable-luxury” travel. Don’t expect
the Four Seasons, but who wants to stay in a gilded bubble anyhow? We always look for good value and offer wonderful hotels and memorable experiences that won’t break the bank and will get you closer to how locals live. Our prices depend on the length of the
trip and the destination. We offer domestic trips for under $2,000 for a shared room, which we encourage. If you don’t have a roommate we will match you with someone. Sometimes this has resulted in lasting friendships with new travel buddies., Some of
our longer trips–two weeks in India or Vietnam, for example–will cost between
$4,800 and $6,000.
What’s included in the price?
Our trips cover most everything you’ll need to dive into a destination. Hotels and most meals, plus special experiences such as hands-on classes and sessions with local artists, writers or entrepreneurs are almost always included, but each trip is different so please be sure to read The Experience and the itinerary. We occasionally have an add-on for an extra price, but those are clearly designated. What’s not covered as a rule are airfare, alcohol and tips.
Do you have payment plans?
We sure do. It’s easy to pay for our trips by setting up automatic credit card charges at regular intervals, interest free. Think of it as the layaway plan to feed your soul.
How do I get trip discounts?
Our NextTribe members get a discount on every trip. Plus, members are the first to hear about new trips and receive upgrades on rooms if they’re available. Check out our three different membership levels here.
What’s the average age of women on the trips?
We welcome all women over 45, but most of our travelers are in the 50 to 65 age range. More important than age is the spirit of the traveler–her curiosity about the world, and her eagerness to embrace new opportunities. We’ve found women of any age with those qualities fit in well with our groups.
What’s the activity level of the trips?
Most of our trips are geared for active travelers who like to walk–a rating of 3 on our 1-5 rating scale. Here are some examples of how we rate. A designation of 1 would be our beach trips, where it’s up to you if you’d like to stroll down the beach, or play in the waves or walk around the small town. Trips where we have dedicated transportation for much of the time (such as India) are a 2; Paris is a 3 because we believe the best way to appreciate a city is to view it on foot. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a 4, because you’ll be walking up some hills (at 6,000 feet altitude) and occasionally on cobblestone sidewalks. Our Inca trail trip is a 5, as are our more adventurous outdoor trips.
