Trip Description
Celebrate the Beloved Author's 250th Birthday, and so much more!
Who do we love? When it comes to authors, is there anyone who garners more affection and passion than Jane Austen? Her characters–from Elizabeth Bennet to Emma Woodhouse–are seared into our hearts. And her plot lines (mostly surrounding love, marriage, and class) are so universal, they’ve been the inspiration for hundreds of books and films. For those who can’t get enough of Austen, we’ve put together this 7-day immersive experience through some of England’s most iconic literary and historical locations.
Interested? Join our information session on Tuesday, Nov 19 at 6:30 PM ET to find out more about the itinerary and meet our trip leader. Everyone who attends will be entered into a drawing to win $400 off the cost of the trip. RSVP Here.
NOTE: NextTribe members receive a $100 discount on price.
Starting in the picturesque Hampshire countryside, we’ll explore Jane Austen’s homes, including the cottage where she wrote her beloved novels and the grand Chawton House. The trip continues to Bath, where we’ll get dolled up to participate in the Regency Costumed Promenade and the Regency Ball as part of the Jane Austen Festival.
From there, the tour moves into the scenic Cotswolds, where we’ll visit charming villages like Tetbury and another film site, with a stop at the private gardens of Their Majesties. The journey concludes in the historic city of Oxford, where Austen’s educational influences come to life through a walking tour. Throughout the trip, we’ll enjoy elegant accommodations, guided tours, and the chance to fully embrace the world of Jane Austen.
5 Reasons We Love This Trip
- Celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday with other exuberant fans at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, the setting for many scenes in her memorable books.
- Paying tribute to the author at her birthplace, in Oxford (where she accompanied her sister at school) and her final resting place.
- Visiting film sites from 1995’s Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Wherefore art thou, Mr. Darcy?
- Channeling Elizabeth Bennet by taking a turn around the gardens at Tylney Hall (where we’ll stay) and Highgrove (the home of you-know-who).
- Donning period dress (bring your own outfit) and getting portraits made by a professional photographer, before rushing off to a true re-creation of a Netherfield Ball. Heaven!
Meet Your Guide: Jeannie Ralston
Jeannie is the founder of NextTribe and like so many women around the world, she adores Jane Austen. When she has trouble sleeping, she listens to an audiobook version of Pride and Prejudice. The comforting, familiar words, the narrator’s musical voice, and the images the story conjures–especially of Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy–helps settle her into a dreamy night’s snooze.

Sample Itinerary
Wednesday, September 10th
After a short train ride from central London to Basingstoke, we'll arrive at Tylney Hall & Gardens. Tylney Hall dates back to the 19th century and has retained much of its period charm. Its most impressive feature is the 66-acre gardens designed by a famous 19th-century landscape architect.
Upon arrival roam the gardens and explore the grounds ahead of a welcome meal in the hotel's Oak Room restaurant.
Thursday, September 11th
This morning we’ll transfer a short distance to the inspiring Hampshire cottage that was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Her house is now a cherished museum with an unparalleled collection of Austen treasures, including items of furniture, paintings and household objects. Visitors can discover Jane’s personal letters and first editions of her novels, items of jewelry that she cherished, portraits of her friends and family, and the tiny writing table at which she wrote.
Afterwards we’ll visit what was known as the ‘Great House’ by Jane Austen. Chawton House. Gardens and park land were owned by her brother Edward, and Jane lived in a cottage on his estate, often strolling to `dawdle away’ many an hour in the grand Elizabethan manor with its picturesque gardens.
We’ll have lunch and explore the house during a private history tour to learn how the estate has evolved over the years, was saved from Cromwell’s destruction by a toddler, and in the following centuries provided a secure home for Jane Austen in one of its cottages.
Later in the afternoon we’ll visit Winchester, the place where Jane spent her final few months with her sister Cassandra and the city’s Cathedral, Jane Austen's resting place.
Friday, September 12th
This morning we’ll travel across the spine of the country and into Bath, where we’ll immerse ourselves in the city's Jane Austen celebrations .
We’ll stop a short distance outside of Bath at the National Trust village of Lacock in Wiltshire. Renamed `Meryton’ in the 1995 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, the location was the home of Aunt Phillips and a frequent destination for the Bennet girls, particularly Lydia and Kitty who love to shop.
We’ll wander around the quintessential English village with timber-framed cottages and local shops before visiting Lacock Abbey. After lunch we’ll continue a short way into Bath where we’ll join the festival activities.
We’ll check into our hotel after a full afternoon exploring the Jane Austen Festival. At the festival, we'll have numerous chances to attend Jane-Austen-themed sessions around town--everything from an exploration of love rituals in her time to the importance of a woman's reticule (a drawstring handbag).
Saturday, September 13th
Today we dress in regency attire and take to the streets of Bath to join the Regency Costumed Promenade. We’ll join over 1,000 people led by the Bath town crier to stroll through this beautiful city for about an hour, ending at the Festival Fayre (based on the 2024 film location). Afterwards we’ll continue to stroll around the city to explore some of the key sights and locations loved by Jane Austen.
This evening we’ll revel in the spectacular surroundings of the Bath Assembly Rooms where we're invited to a “private public ball” reminiscent of dancing at Netherfield Park. Imagine you are joining the Bennet and Bingley sisters for a splendid evening of dancing, card playing and socializing. We invite you to wear your tallest, fanciest feathers as the outfit theme for the evening.
Sunday, September 14th
After a relaxed breakfast, we’ll leave the city behind us this morning and enter The Cotswolds, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the British government. Our first stop is Highgrove House, the private residence of Their Majesties The King Charles III and The Queen Consort. The estate is renowned for its beautiful organic gardens, showcasing a variety of landscapes and sustainable gardening practices. We’ll have a tour of the estate, learning about the gardens’ history, organic management and sources of inspiration; our guide will explain the hidden curios and horticultural innovations behind them.
We’ll then continue to Tetbury, a charming historic town known for its elegant 17th- and 18th-century architecture and antique shops. We'll stop at Chavenage House in Gloucestershire, known for its role as Barton Cottage in the 2008 BBC adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. This stunning estate, with its impressive architecture and lush surroundings, offers guided tours that provide a glimpse into its storied past and cinematic significance.
A final transfer will take us to the historic city best known for its prestigious university, Oxford. The city features stunning medieval architecture, including the iconic Radcliffe Camera and Christ Church College. We’ll arrive late afternoon and head to dinner in Oxford.
Monday, September 15th
We'll spend the day exploring Oxford's cobbled streets, riverside walks and peering into charming book shops.
In the spring of 1783, when Jane was seven and Cassandra was ten, the sisters were sent to a boarding school in Oxford. As the sisters were so young, Jane was likely sent to accompany Cassandra. Oxford undoubtedly influenced Jane in many ways, With limited formal education, Jane learned literature from her father and poetry from James, both Oxford scholars. It is suggested that her vivid style of writing may have been influenced by The Loiterer, the weekly periodical edited by James and Henry between 1789-90, while they were at Oxford.
We’ll visit the Bodleian Library and the beautiful Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library before visiting the stunning University of Oxford college, Christ Church. We'll have some free time to take in the sights before regrouping ahead of a celebration meal where we’ll raise a glass to a week immersed in the world of Jane Austen.
Tuesday, September 16th
This morning we’ll say our goodbyes. You can take a bus to Heathrow or Gatwick if you're leaving the UK. Or enjoy an extended stay in the city or a train to London where you can continue on your journey, wherever it may take you.
Logistics
Fly into and out of London. We will meet at Waterloo Station in London in the early afternoon and take the train to Basingstoke.
If you fly into Heathrow on the morning of Sept. 10th, take the Heathrow Express into Paddington Station and take a subway or cab to Waterloo Station.
Our trip will end in Oxford and you can take the train into London or other parts of the UK. Or you can take a shuttle from Oxford to Heathrow or Gatwick on the Oxford Bus Company: https://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/airline
Before the trip, we will gather for a Zoom meet and greet, and you will also get a schedule of everyone's flights. That way you can see if another traveler is on your flight so you can share a taxi from the airport.
We use WhatsApp (LINK: https://www.whatsapp.com/download/) for communication before and during our trip so we can keep track of flight delays, meetup times, etc. This also requires an international calling plan ($10/day with most carriers) so you can get messages and use GPS while out exploring. The app has to be downloaded before the trip.
We believe in being as eco-friendly as possible, so we don't hand out printed itineraries. We use this app to give you important updates during the trip, so it is essential. You can always delete it later if you want to.
If you'd like to extend your stay before or after, or if you have questions, please direct them to Marcy Mitchell, our travel manager, travel@NextTribe.com.

Our travelers love us (yay!)
Colleen M., California
What I love about the NextTribe trips is that there is so much camaraderie of other women that are like you, and then the fabulous things that the organizers puts together to give you that viewpoint, it’s awesome.
”Courtney M., Texas
What I love about NextTribe trips is that you get the experience from an insider’s perspective—someone that has ties to the community and focused on building relationships from the start. I’ve been on a trip with another women’s travel group that dropped a guide in, not personally knowing anything about the locale, traditions, or culture. She was there to make sure you showed up on time, got on the bus, etc. With NextTribe, you feel like you’re having a personalized experience with your best girlfriends.
”Donna B., Washington
I didn't know anyone going on the trip but that didn't stop me from signing up. I have learned that some of my life's greatest adventures have come from taking a risk and jumping in feet first. So glad I did with NextTribe! I may not have known anybody at the start, but now I feel like I know everybody.
”Connie B., Pennsylvania
I love to meet and interact with strong, mature women from across the country as we learn together.
”Leslie M., Georgia
I always come by myself on NextTribe trips because I like to meet super fun and interesting women. We're always doing fun and interesting things in great cities that you couldn't do on your own because you wouldn't know the people or places or the insiders.
”Teresa S., Kentucky
NextTribe fills the need I have to travel with older interesting women who are curious about the world and want to share the journey.
”We write articles about all our trips. Read about these special experiences.

Frequently asked questions
What’s different about your trips?
We curate trips specifically for curious, engaged women over 45. You’re pretty well assured that your fellow travelers will be a lot like you–since you’ve all responded to the idea of “aging boldly.”. That means built-in compatibility in your small group, including the woman who is leading the adventure.. In addition to specializing in group travel for people who don’t normally like group travel, we also pride ourselves on creating experiences that allow you to interact with local women or get deeper into the culture than you would if you planned the trip yourself.
Where do you go?
We have a wide range of weekend jaunts here in the U.S. for those who want a quick getaway. We also love taking women to Mexico, where founder Jeannie Ralston used to live. We’re always talking about pushing boundaries, and we’re doing that in the geographic sense too. For those with more time, we offer trips all over Europe, to India, Vietnam, Peru (for a hike on the inca Trail to Machu Picchu). Soon, our travelers will be getting passport stamps in even more countries on six continents. Be saving those frequent flier miles!
What do you mean by transformational travel?
NextTribe is affiliated with the Transformational Travel Council, an international group of travel professionals dedicated to making the world a better place, one trip and one traveler at a time. We recognize that travelers, especially post-pandemic, are looking for more than just a date and a destination. They can shop for that anywhere online. Our community honors the intention behind a traveler’s investment in a trip. Our travelers want to have fun (we do too!) and to travel with a sense of purpose and belonging. That’s why we go to great lengths to provide ways for women to self-select by reading the articles in our magazine and the content of our website. If you like what you see, you’re likely to be a NextTribe traveler, and we look forward to seeing you on a trip soon!
What if I travel solo?
If you really prefer to book your travel yourself and go it alone, we applaud you. That’s brave and bold and we would never try to talk you out of it. But our trips are designed so that even a woman who’s used to traveling alone, or someone shy about meeting new people, will feel comfortable in our group. Our trip leaders are there to “read the room” and make sure everyone feels included and respected.
What if I don’t like group travel?
We don’t either! Not the way most groups do it. If you feel like doing what the group is doing, great! Join us for dinner or just some of the activities. All the benefits of solo travel and the comfort of being with a group. Our groups are small (normally around 12 to 14 women) and in most situations, you are free to opt out of an activity. We figure you’re grown-ass women who know what’s best for you.
What’s the price range of your trips?
We are committed to providing what we call “affordable-luxury” travel. Don’t expect
the Four Seasons, but who wants to stay in a gilded bubble anyhow? We always look for good value and offer wonderful hotels and memorable experiences that won’t break the bank and will get you closer to how locals live. Our prices depend on the length of the
trip and the destination. We offer domestic trips for under $2,000 for a shared room, which we encourage. If you don’t have a roommate we will match you with someone. Sometimes this has resulted in lasting friendships with new travel buddies., Some of
our longer trips–two weeks in India or Vietnam, for example–will cost between
$4,800 and $6,000.
What’s included in the price?
Our trips cover most everything you’ll need to dive into a destination. Hotels and most meals, plus special experiences such as hands-on classes and sessions with local artists, writers or entrepreneurs are almost always included, but each trip is different so please be sure to read The Experience and the itinerary. We occasionally have an add-on for an extra price, but those are clearly designated. What’s not covered as a rule are airfare, alcohol and tips.
Do you have payment plans?
We sure do. It’s easy to pay for our trips by setting up automatic credit card charges at regular intervals, interest free. Think of it as the layaway plan to feed your soul.
How do I get trip discounts?
Our NextTribe members get a discount on every trip. Plus, members are the first to hear about new trips and receive upgrades on rooms if they’re available. Check out our three different membership levels here.
What’s the average age of women on the trips?
We welcome all women over 45, but most of our travelers are in the 50 to 65 age range. More important than age is the spirit of the traveler–her curiosity about the world, and her eagerness to embrace new opportunities. We’ve found women of any age with those qualities fit in well with our groups.
What’s the activity level of the trips?
Most of our trips are geared for active travelers who like to walk–a rating of 3 on our 1-5 rating scale. Here are some examples of how we rate. A designation of 1 would be our beach trips, where it’s up to you if you’d like to stroll down the beach, or play in the waves or walk around the small town. Trips where we have dedicated transportation for much of the time (such as India) are a 2; Paris is a 3 because we believe the best way to appreciate a city is to view it on foot. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a 4, because you’ll be walking up some hills (at 6,000 feet altitude) and occasionally on cobblestone sidewalks. Our Inca trail trip is a 5, as are our more adventurous outdoor trips.
