You know the old saying “all dressed up with nowhere to go”? It should really be “all the places to go with nothing to wear” because there seems to be a universal feeling of total frustration when it comes time to figure out what to wear to a special event. Seriously, we could have a packed closet the size of Delaware and still have a hard time picking out an outfit to wear to a party or a semi-formal shindig.
And now that holidays are upon us, we’re really going to need to dig into our closets deeper than usual. Yup, ’tis the season to hit the party circuit extra hard—and look effortlessly stylish and put together while doing so.
Our fashion and style editor Kim Cihlar is back with another “Talk’n Closet,” and she’s answering our silent cry for festive fashion help by gifting us with her expertise for dressing up. And, of course, she’s offering tips for how to work with what we’ve already got.
The Little Black Dress
The LBD is an age-old standard for good reason: It provides tons of options. And a simple black dress (like this linen number from H&M) can even be dressed up enough for a fancy dinner with friends. Throw on some fun necklaces to make a statement.
Add a Colorful Jacket
Take that LBD to the next level by fancying it up with a pop of color. A deep aubergine is an especially hot hue for this season. This Calvin Klein Geometric Panel Long Jacket adds just the right amount of drama.
Work with Texture
Adding a luxurious material like velvet instantly gives a simple black dress a more posh feel. We’re in love with this Lafayette Velvet Coat from Anthropologie. The lovely deep green color is perfect for the season.
Work a Boyfriend-Style Jacket
A boyfriend jacket is super chic, and adding a leather belt dresses things up with a little more detail. Or add a slightly tailored blazer for instant sophistication. Give Banana Republic’s Unstructured Stretch Ponte Blazer a try.
Think Outside the Box
You know what the great thing is about getting dressed up? It lets you experiment with things you wouldn’t normally wear. Pair a sparkly top (because sequins make everything better) with some dressy joggers (like the Hail Yes Track Pants from ADAY), and you’ve got a fresh look.
Or try a kimono dress! (You know how much we adore kimonos.) We’re loving the Winslow Dress from Reformation and this Kimono Sleeve Wrap Dress by Eloquii.
Dress Up Your Outfit With a Shawl
A cashmere or wool shawl is comfy, cozy, timeless and extra dramatic. What else could we ask for? You can’t go wrong with a Charter Club Pure Cashmere Oversized Scarf.
