There’s a new “greenie” on the scene, and it’s not related to kale, believe it or not. Moringa, or Moringa oleifera, has been gaining in popularity as a superfood additive in smoothies, as a tea, or in capsule supplements over the past few years. And for good reason.

This lush green powder packs a punch. Moringa is also known as horseradish tree, drumstick tree or ben oil tree, native to Himalayan Mountains and parts of India and Africa. What’s all the fuss about? It’s nutrient heavy and the benefits are bountiful.

Stir a spoonful into your morning mix for major health benefits. Specifically, Moringa neutralizes free radicals, fights inflammation, and has been shown to lower blood sugar, as well as cholesterol. It’s a brain function-enhancer too, according to The Journal of Food Biochemistry. Research also shows that the polyphenols in the plant’s leaves and flowers protect the liver, reversing oxidation. And with its antibacterial and antifungal properties, it fights infection, too.

For all these benefits and more, we say “cheers!” This is one supplement that makes it easy being green.
