We love a good story, and that’s one of the reasons we’re impressed with XCVI, an L.A.-based, family-run casual clothing business that believes fashion is first and foremost about people. Just take a look at the “Meet the Family” videos on the website featuring their employees—but make sure you have tissues at hand; you won’t have a dry eye when you finish. How often does fashion make you cry, unless it’s a scratchy wool sweater or a pinching waistband?
Headed by Gita Zeltzer, an Israeli-born theater actor and director who fostered her artistic creativity by funneling it into fashion after moving her family to Los Angeles in 1989, XCVI began as a small style shop on the ultra chic Melrose Avenue. By 1996, the back of the boutique had burgeoned into a collection business, complete with clothing manufacturing. Gita’s collaboration then and now with designer Lilia Gorodnitski blossomed into XCVI—1996 in Roman numerals—clothing based on comfort, style, and casual elegance.
The company prides itself on embracing an ethical vision in both design and business practices, keeping its people and its customers at the heart of its operations. Even vendors are held to a strict code of conduct that stresses commitment and compliance.
Today, the business reigns have been handed to Gita’s daughter and son, who are just as dedicated to the legacy of family and casual, elegant fashion as ever, producing beautiful styles that bring joy and easy comfort to women and their lifestyles.
Fall Fashion 2018: The Looks
For the new fall collection, an earthy color wheel is romanced by Renaissance-inspired details and the softest, sometimes textured fabrics in oversized voluminous silhouettes. The low-impact dyes used for the sumptuous palette are free of hazardous substances and toxins.
Ever find the perfect shape or silhouette you love one season, but can never find the same to replace or to update it the next season in a new hue? XCVI listens to its wearers. Recognizing the greater longevity of its fashion bestsellers, Gita and Lilia introduced “Wearables,” a collection of styles that don’t disappear into the next season but that are restock often, refreshed with new colors each season.
The collection caters to the plus-size community, offering extended sizes and silhouettes perfect for curvy classics, and it now includes accessories like today’s ever-present stretch bead bracelets, gemstone pendants, leather cuffs, and loafer slip-ons.
