Move Over Gwyneth: Jane Fonda Is Going into Retail

The fitness queen is back with a new lifestyle brand aimed right at midlife women. But will there be legwarmers?

We all know Jane Fonda from her acting (Klute, Coming Home, On Golden Pond, Grace and Frankie) and her work as an activist. And most of us remember her fitness empire, too, when almost 40 years ago she introduced her workout series.

I have a lifelong passion for fitness and health, not just because I look better when I take care of myself but because it makes me feel better and think better.

Often clad in a striped leotard, with leg warmers scrunched down around her ankles, and a headband to absorb the basically non-existent sweat, she catapulted aerobics to the forefront of our consciousness. There was her original Jane Fonda’s Workout Book in 1981 that stayed at number one on the best-seller list for months; soon after came VCR tapes that had us all flopping on the floor in front of our TVs, skipping, bouncing, and stretching with her in the hopes of emulating her lean form and high energy. For many, it was a watershed moment of owning one’s health and fitness—and pursuing it in the privacy of one’s own home.

Jane Fonda’s New Lifestyle Brand: The Fitness Queen Returns

Now, it looks like Fonda, who’s on the cusp of turning 81, is ready to head back to those roots. She has just signed an agreement with Evine Live Inc., which is multi-channel video retailer based in the U.S. She’s creating a new brand that will support women ages 50 plus in leading a healthy lifestyle. It’s said to include athleisure wear (no word on whether leg warmers and striped leotards are in the works), as well as fitness equipment and nutritional products. Jane told WWD: “I have a lifelong passion for fitness and health, not just because I look better when I take care of myself but because it makes me feel better and think better.” Set to launch this coming spring, it marks Fonda’s first foray into clothing. Was she perhaps inspired by her current role as retired cosmetics guru Grace Hanson? Or tired of seeing the younger generation (cough, cough: Gwyneth Paltrow) build a mega wellness brand?

Let’s watch and see what unfolds.
