Wherever you go, there you are—and so is your hair. And let’s be real: No one wants to discover they forgot the adapter for their curling iron on a bucket-list trip to Rome. Or be scrolling vacation pictures only to get distracted by frizz, flyaways, flatness, roots, fill-in-your-personal-tress-trouble-here.

Yearning to see new sights and experience new places? NextTribe takes small groups of women ages 45+ on adventures in the U.S. and around the globe. Check us out here.

Fortunately, the beauty biz has your back (and your hair) with quality styling tools and products that won’t hog space in your suitcase or weigh it down. To suss them out, we asked travel-savvy women (stylists included) and pored over reliable reviews to come up with this list of groomers-to-go. Check out these 10 great travel hair tools.

Straighten Up!

NextTribe CEO Jeannie Ralston relies on the Numoya GoBrush PRO, a cordless (no converter required), portable (14 ounces), easy-to-use tool that delivers salon-level sleekness in minutes. The styling brush has three heat settings, works on all hair types, and lasts for 30 minutes per charge. Jeannie says it’s a must: “It keeps my hair looking smooth and neat, even in the humidity of India.”

High (Style) and Dry

Next up for our best travel hair tools: Multipurpose products are a plus when you’re going places, and the Umeely blow dryer brush can get you looking good and out of the hotel room in a flash. It boasts an oval-shaped barrel for fast 360° airflow, titanium plates for smooth style, and round edges to boost volume. While the tool is corded, it’s dual-voltage to create coiffure on any continent. As Ralston points out: “We’ve been on trips where women have burned out their regular plug-in hair tools, even if they’d brought a converter. Dual voltage is the way to go!”

Curls, Quickly

No way will you miss the tour bus getting your ringlets ready, thanks to the Conair Styling Curler Brush. This dual-voltage corded tool made the cut with Travel Fashion Girl, thanks to its 30-second heat-up, ball-tipped bristles for tangle-free styling, and multi-layered barrel design to ensure even heating, so that curls hold their shape. It features 25 heat settings and includes a push-button turbo blast of extra heat if needed. The 1 1/4” barrel is ideal for loose to medium-sized curls; a 3/4” version is also available.

Small Wonder

If you prefer a ceramic flat iron to smooth your strands but don’t want to schlep your full-size styler, the Wavytalk Mini Flat Iron may be your best bet. This dual-voltage tool took the top spot in TLC’s recent tester review of these totable tools, since it weighs less than half a pound, heats up in 30 seconds, and can be used to straighten and create curls. “I liked how it made my hair shiny and smooth,” tester Jen Glantz reports. “It did as good of a job on my hair as the one I use at home, which is much larger.”

If you want to tote a ceramic flat iron to smooth your strands but don’t want to schlep a full-size styler, we’ve got you covered.

Root Relief

You meant to book a colorist appointment before your trip but it slipped through the cracks. Now, grays are appearing a few days into your vacay. You can hide under a hat or reach for Color Wow Root Cover Up Powder, selected as Best Overall in a recent InStyle review of touch-ups. It comes in a small compact (a la eyeshadow) and includes a double-ended brush with small bristles for precise application and beautiful blending—no patches or uneven color. The powder formula clings well (even to oily hair) with no stiff feel, adds a subtle touch of shine, and comes in eight shades.

Top Tails

Sure, for a destination wedding or other fancy faraway affair, a special coif is required, but for planes, trains, automobiles, and all-around sightseeing, the classic ponytail is still ideal for shoulder-length or longer locks. “A ponytail is pretty much all I do when I’m traveling,” says Baldwin, New York-based hairstylist Macy Sinclair, who’s been to 84 countries (and counting).

Ponytail holders that work for your hair’s texture can be a travel hassle-saver: Such an easy styling tool!

The key is finding the right ponytail tie for your tresses—and New York magazine’s the Strategist recently reviewed a bunch of ‘em. For fine hair like Macy’s, splurge on delicate silk (such as these Slip silk scrunchies), which holds with less chance of breakage and tangling. If your strands are thick, coarse, and/or curly, Gimme Beauty Thick Hair Tie Bands are chunky enough to  give you the perfect pony.

Beach Brush

Here’s another cool best travel hair tool: If your idea of a holiday means getting in and out of the water often, the Wet Brush Squirt Detangler belongs in your beach bag (we love the mini version). Travel blogger Allison Sicking told TODAY that it’s “a game changer for brushing wet hair without causing any breakage or damage, and makes it effortless to detangle even the most stubborn knots,” thanks to the gentle action of its flexible bristles.

Power Player

Even finger-styling wash-and-go girls may need a dryer—preferably, one with serious oomph, unlike those hotels typically provide.  Another one of the TODAY-approved hair travel tools, the GHD Flight + Travel Hairdryer offers powerful airflow (78 percent of a full-sized model), weighs under a pound, and comes in its own carrying case. One five-star reviewer, a 60-something woman with a short, curly style, raves; “Compact, easy to handle, wonderful results. Dries my hair quickly and leaves it shining.”

Fit Kit

Everything, everywhere, all at once? This cool kit from Foxybae is pretty close! The tiny travel tote includes a mini-sized curling wand, a flat iron, and a hairdryer. Shop TODAY editor Amanda Fama says, “When I first used the curling wand, I was shocked at how quickly it heated up and curled my hair.” And the zippered case holds it all together and has a  marble-like finish you’ll spot instantly among your packed items.

Little Luxuries

Those itty-bitty bottles found in hotel bathrooms look cute, but the products they contain may not give your hair the care it deserves. Treat yourself to travel sizes of your favorite brands and your locks will be as lovely away as they are at home—plus you won’t have to worry about TSA liquid limits. Consider the Mini Essentials Kit  from Rōz, which features four just-enough sizes to cleanse, condition, hydrate, and style.

Tote along some luxurious haircare in TSA-approved quantities with this travel-ready kit.

The Santa Lucia Styling Oil is an especially indulgent way to de-frizz, add shine, and combat humidity. Verified reviewer Caity Rae, who was seeking a product to make her frizzy hair soft, smooth, and touchable, insists, “Rōz Santa Lucia Styling Oil ticks off all the boxes!”

Hair Tool and Product Pointers

A few things to keep in mind when packing hair gear for a trip:

  • Check TSA regulations regarding getting through security with your travel hair tools, especially cordless tools, which may need to be toted in your carryon due to battery regulations.
  • If packing hair tools in checked luggage, be sure they’re adequately padded to withstand rough handling. You can place them between soft clothing items or slide them into an oven mitt, which could come in handy as a heat protector while you’re hairstyling away from home.
  • Clear packing tubes offer a great way to see your hair tools and products at a glance. Slip individual stylers into drawstring dust bags for extra protection.
