Having recently returned from a two-week tour in India, I’m a bit of a travel clothing connoisseur these days. Dressing for a 15-hour flight and packing for stints on trains, busses, rickshaws, tuk tuks, as well as hiking the Himalayas, has me well-equipped to relay travel style tips to our intrepid NextTribe travelers.
First, pack loose, comfy, cozy, wrinkle-resistant layers that work for flights and other modes of travel. Whether you’re in first, business, or economy class, pack and wear unrestricted and unencumbered clothes for travel — stretch fabrics, basic silhouettes, and streamlined styles. You might be tempted by the one-and-done ease of jumpsuits or overalls since they seem like the perfect travel style solution. But if it’s a long flight and your bladder isn’t bigger than the in-flight snacking nuts, do yourself a favor and allow for easy access in the loo!
You’ll want stretchy, wicking, and thermal-wise pieces. Meaning: warmth for when A/C feels as though you’ve landed in the Arctic and coolness for a jam-packed plane that allows for little airflow. Yoga pants are great, especially for a little chair yoga as in-flight entertainment. Yoga leggings, jogger styles flared, wide or narrow, cropped or long, are all great options. Let’s take a closer look:
- Hit the ground running with Aday’s Easy Days Pants, which they claim are “way better than leggings.” Lightweight and cropped, with a gathered waistline, phone pocket, and tie belt detail, $145.
2. Fly, arrive, and experience your excursion in style and comfort, wearing Columbia’s stretchy hiking cargo pants with multiple pockets for all your immediate needs, featuring durable, lightweight fabric, cinchable cuffs, UPF 50 sun protection with stain-resistant tech for all your adventures, $70.
3. Plan your packing palette around neutrals so all pieces coordinate. That way you’ll get at least two weeks’ wear out of one week’s packing, which I consider a best travel clothes rule; everything should mix and match. And jogger-style sets that double as onboard sleepwear, like Cozy Earth’s natural-fiber bamboo lounge set, wake up wrinkle-free, $240. If only we could do the same!
4. Hoodies more your flying fashion fave? Try Alo’s Jet Set Hoodie combo that sports the same pretty pj effect, with a little more warmth and cocooning for your ears and head, $340.
5. Frank & Eileen’s Venice Trail Set is a sophisticated cross between a roomy poncho and a warm hoodie, topping pocketed joggers, oh-so-cozy in soft triple fleece cotton, and a range of dreamy shades, $470.
6. Layer up for comfort and warmth on the plane and for any evenings out where the mercury dips wearing REI’s wickable base layer long-sleeve top, $55.
7. With its snazzy snap-front neckline and tank top sleeve silhouette, Andie’s Malibu One-Piece Swimwear does double duty as a bodysuit, making more space for souvenirs! $112.

8. Wrap yourself in comfort while trying to catch a few winks with a shawl or a poncho that envelops you like a blankie. Quince’s Mongolian Cashmere Poncho, $100, sprinkles dreams of slumbering in your own bed even while soaring at 35,000 miles above sea level.
9. For greater warmth, here’s another idea for best travel clothes: Think Sherpa fleece that can travel from plane to peak. Patagonia’s Classic Retro-X® Fleece Jacket uses zippered pockets for safe keeping of phone, wallet, and sunglasses, $230.
10. Take care of your tootsies while traveling, too, with Bombas’ 2-Pack Compression Socks & Grippy Slippers, $75, that help achy legs with blood flow and can alleviate swollen feet or any potential circulatory issues while flying cramped quarters. Remember: Chair yoga movement is a healthy alternative to walking the aisles when seat belt signs are illuminated.
11. A money belt is perfect for protecting money, passports, and phones, but we love a simple crossbody bag for safeguarding special items safely and stylishly. If you’re worried about strap-snatching, secure the bag under your outer garments. ShortyLove’s Crossbody Bag in leopard print water-resistant nylon has a wide comfortable strap and zippered compartments for all the essentials, plus— it’s leopard! $128.
12. & 13. If this isn’t your bag, literally, but you want to zuzsh up monochromatic basic casual travel wear, try Haute Shore’s Jeri Showoff Crossbody Bag with vivid neon accents, $72, or Canvelle’s classy Sling Bag with RFID-blocking pockets, hidden zippers, slash-resistant fabrics, and lockable compartments, $115, both simultaneously easy-to-wear, chic, and safety-oriented.
14. Don’t forget overnight cosmetics and toiletries carried separately for the plane. Bagsmart’s waterproof Space-Saver Toiletry Bag, $30, hangs like a garment bag to unfurl for right-at-your-fingertips-ready access to toothpaste, brush, and makeup.
15. Or go OG with Leatherology’s Train Case, modernized by a rainbow of color choices, $160.
Wings up! Here’s to traveling safely and in style.
