At the start of each new month, we love combing through the upcoming birthdays to see which women are entering NextTribe age or showing us how to live it. These celebrities are proof that meaningful work, important contributions, and memorable moments are not in the rearview mirror. There is still much to look forward to and celebrate.

July 1: Missy Elliot, 50

With 30 million albums sold in the U.S., Missy Elliot is the bestselling female rapper in history, according to Billboard Magazine. You’d think she could afford to take a vacation, but on her birthday she tweeted this: “I work so hard I have been in the industry over 25 yrs and only had 3 vacations.” The hard work has certainly paid off. She’s won four Grammys, eight MTV video awards, and has had great influence in the music world. She was one of the first rappers to address feminism, gender equality, body positivity, and sex positivity in her songs. Take some time off for yourself, Missy.

July 4: Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, 70

NextTribe is lucky to have Kathleen Kennedy Townsend on our advisory board. The former lieutenant governor of Maryland has also spoken at NextTribe events. We are endlessly impressed with her energy and spirit, especially after an unthinkably horrendous 2020 in which she lost a daughter and grandson. Her work on improving the retirement system is going to help all of us. Brava Kathleen!

July 8: Anjelica Huston, 70

When we first saw her regal presence in Prizzi’s Honor, we thought Anjelica Huston was an American goddess. And so she remains in our minds today. She has always had an unconventional beauty to match her uncommon gifts as an actress. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Prizzi’s Honor, and has gone on to star in a string of Wes Anderson movies and, in a feat of perfect casting, as Morticia in The Addams Family movies. Today, she is showing us how to greet the eighth decade with style and glamour.

July 12: Cheryl Ladd, 70

Cheryl Ladd is best known for pinch hitting for Farrah Fawcett starting on the second season of Charlie’s Angels, playing Fawcett’s little sister over the next four seasons. She never achieved such heights again in her career, but she did go on to have roles in a number of TV series and movies, including the title role in the biopic Grace Kelly. In addition to be a singer (she voiced a role in Josie and the Pussycats), she’s written two books and serves as a celebrity ambassador for the child abuse prevention and treatment non-profit Childhelp.

July 15: Diane Kruger, 45

Welcome to the NextTribe age Diane Kruger! You’ve already accomplished a lot (playing Helen of Troy for instance) and have much more to look forward to!

July 18: Elizabeth McGovern, 60

Elizabeth McGovern is proof that life can get richer and more interesting with age—even in youth-obsessed Hollywood. McGovern had early success playing Evelyn Nesbit (and receiving an Academy Award nomination) in the movie Ragtime (and was briefly engaged to Sean Penn). But her true breakthrough came much later, in her 50s, when she starred as Cora Crawley in Downton Abbey. While other ingenues of her generation have come and gone, McGovern has had staying power and demonstrates the art of not peaking too early.

July 20: Sandra Oh, 50

We thought we couldn’t love Sandra Oh more than we did in Gray’s Anatomy. Then she takes on the title role in Killing Eve, and we were gobsmacked. Rolling Stone said this of her performance as the flawed and funny Eve Polastri: She’s “a compulsively watchable actor – expressive and complex, blending wry wit and deep pathos.” We believe a lot of that comes from having real life experience. We can’t wait to see what she does next.

July 21: Charlotte Gainsbourg, 50

Born into a celebrity life as the child of an English actress and a French singer, Charlotte Gainsbourg has capitalized on her head start in the fame game. With both acting and music chops, she has been a dual threat, appearing in both Hollywood and French films and recording five albums. With her air of coolness and confidence, she has a lot to still show us.

July 24: Lynda Carter, 70

For many, Lynda Carter will always be Wonder Woman, even though a newcomer, Gal Gadot, is currently wearing the tiara and cuffs. Carter has always embraced her role as the iconic superhero. “I knew very early on that this character is much more than me certainly, and to try to divorce myself from the experiences that other people have of the character is silly,” Carter has said of her Wonder Woman days. Beyond performing as a singer and taking on other acting roles, Carter is a staunch advocate and supporter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, abortion rights, and LGBTQ rights. Thanks for showing us how to be strong and sensitive at the same time.
