Few of us don’t love some fries next to our burger…club sandwich…heck, even our salad. And aren’t you kind of grateful for the Millennial trend towards fried chicken and waffles, popping up on brunch menus across America?
Well, summon your willpower and remember how much you love kale and grilled chicken, because new research says that fried foods are particularly harmful for women our age.
Fried Food and Women’s Health
Here are the results of a study conducted by the University of Iowa College of Public Health.
Investigators tracked 100,000-plus postmenopausal women—ages 50 to 79—and the shocking findings were recently published in BMJ, a scientific journal:
- Just say no: A diet high in fried foods was linked to a higher risk of death, especially those due to heart-related ailments. Women who consumed one or more servings of fried food a day had an eight percent higher risk of death than those who skipped the grease.
- Put down that drumstick: Fried chicken seems to be public-enemy number one for women age 50-plus. One or more weekly servings of fried chicken correlated to a 13 percent higher risk of death from any cause and a 12 percent higher risk of heart-related deaths as compared with women who did not eat fried foods. Scary!
A diet high in fried foods was linked to a higher risk of death.
- Something fishy: For those of us who thought seafood was pretty healthy in any form…um, no! One or more weekly servings of fried fish or shellfish was linked to a seven percent higher risk of death from any cause and a 13 percent higher risk of heart-related death.
We know most of you don’t eat fried foods that often—but if you do find yourself falling into the habit of ordering it regularly (or swiping it off a friend’s plate), may we say, Please don’t? We need you around. We’ve got a world to change.
