As we reach the middle of the month, we wanted to give a shout-out to a few of the fabulous women entering their 60s in inspiring ways. There’s a ton of November celebrity birthdays, but these are extra special.
Megan Mullally, November 12
That voice! You’d know it anywhere—from Will & Grace to Parks and Recreation to many movies. She’s an Emmy winner who says she is really hitting her stride at midlife. “Around the time I turned 50, I stopped caring so much about what other people thought of me. There’s something powerful about not taking yourself too seriously. It shows in my work life and even in the way I dress and wear my hair,” she said. “I’m more sure of myself now than I was 30 years ago. I’ve learned that there’s no such thing as ‘too old’ to pursue the things that inspire me. In fact, you can do whatever you want to do for as long as you want to do it.” What a great attitude to have as she embarks on a new decade.
Marg Helgenberger, November 16
Marg got her start on Ryan’s Hope, a soap opera, and then landed a role on China Beach, which earned her an Emmy. But most of us know Marg from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, where she picked up more awards for her portrayal of a showgirl turned blood-spatter analyst (!), a role she prepped for by spending time at a coroner’s office. She’s also been in a host of movies, from Erin Brockovich to Species.
‘I feel less pressure than I used to. … I’m much more comfortable with myself now.’ Marg Helgenberger
A believer in holistic wellness, Marg isn’t fazed by aging. “When health issues arise, be open to all types of treatment, be it traditional Western medicine, or Chinese, Ayurvedic—you name it,” she’s said. “I feel less pressure than I used to. I felt it in my 30s because that’s a crucial decade for women in the film business. But I’m much more comfortable with myself now. It’s about accepting who you are. I don’t think that means giving up. Acceptance means acknowledging what is, and what goals you have, and taking the necessary steps to achieve those goals.”
Jamie Lee Curtis, November 22
It’s hard to pick a favorite movie of hers—Halloween, True Lies, A Fish Called Wanda, the new version of Halloween. And her accomplishments off-screen are also impressive—from authoring books to opening up about very personal struggles. Adding to our respect-fest is the fact that she’s always embraced her age and appearance, posing without makeup and with no retouching back in 2002 and carrying the torch of authenticity since them. Welcome to 60, Jamie Lee!
