How sick are you of action movies or rom-coms where some 60-something guy is dating a 25-year-old? Us too.
That’s why we are psyched for the summer movies of 2018, when women our age are turning up on the silver screen in greater numbers than…well, than we can remember.
- “The Book Club,” opening May 18th, stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton (above with Andy Garcia), Mary Steenburgern, and Candice Bergen (who says the movie offers have largely dried up now that she’s over 70). The quartet of women decide to spice up their lives and live boldly after reading “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
- “Oceans 8” (June 8), the all-female reboot of the “Oceans 11” series, stars Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham-Carter, Cate Blanchett, and Sarah Paulson in a caper about pulling off a heist at the famed Met Gala.
- “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” which is out on July 20th, is a sequel to the mammoth hit of a decade ago, and stars Meryl Streep, Cher and some guy candy in the form of Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.
While recent summer movies that star women 40-plus (think “Florence Foster Jenkins” and “Ricky and the Flash”) have not broken the $30 million box-office mark, we do have some summer movie cred. The first “Mamma Mia” movie grossed over $600 million worldwide in 2008, and “The Help” raked in almost $170 million in 2011. Let’s do our part to make sure this summer movies 2018 convince Hollywood to keep making watchable films for us over the summer.
And if you’re looking for something to watch at home, try HBO’s “The Tale,” starring Laura Dern and Ellen Burstyn, as daughter and mother trying to understand the #metoo moment Dern’s character experienced at age 13. It premieres on May 26th.
