Whether published or yet-to-be-published, every writer can benefit from collaboration with a jury of their peers: a group of writers who offer honest encouragement, the magic combination of critique and support. This course with Meredith Maran will address the issues that keep writers from getting a group off the ground, and the issues that keep the group from living up to its full potential, and the issues that cause too many writers’ groups to fall apart.
• How to attract, screen, and recruit the perfect mix of writers for the group
• How to custom-structure the group so it works best for the writers in it
• Learning the art of honest encouragement, critiquing and supporting each member to help them achieve their best work
• How to balance general discussions of craft, publishing trends, and such practical matters as finding an agent—with specific workshopping of group members’ work
• How to deal constructively with inter-group tensions, competitiveness, and conflict
In each session, a different member of Meredith’s own writing group will make a brief presentation about how the group works for her, and will take questions from the students.
Also in each session, the students will break into small groups to practice forming and running the writers’ group of their dreams.
The sessions will be one week apart, with homework assigned and reported on in each succeeding session. Those students who are ready to form a writing group will be guided to do so by the end of the three weeks.
For a separate fee, Meredith will be available to consult with and/or lead writers’ groups that form as a result of this workshop.
