We will have many opportunities to explore the stunning nature in New Zealand--hiking, kayaking, jet boat touring. None of the hikes is strenuous. We keep the hikes at a moderate level, and we will provide whenever possible a gentler hike as an option. As always, travelers are free to opt out of an activity, but we do encourage the hikes since this is the best way to experience the landscapes and natural beauty.

14 Days: Aukland to Queenstown

Glowworm caves. Wine before dinner. Scenery that stops you mid-sentence. And Ruth at the helm of the jet boat. This is how we roll in New Zealand

Our New Zealand trip takes you the full length of the country, north island to south, so you get all of it: Auckland’s harbor light, a Waiheke vineyard, glowworms clinging to a cave ceiling like a starlit sky, an intimate welcome from a Māori community, geothermal mud and hot springs, the wild, rainforested West Coast, a jet boat safari into a UNESCO World Heritage wilderness, and the alpine drama of Wānaka and Queenstown. Two islands, fourteen days, no rushing.

At NextTribe, we believe this stage of life — 45 and beyond — is exactly the moment to say yes to more of it: new places, new friendships, experiences you couldn’t easily arrange on your own. We’ve partnered with a New Zealand-based, woman-owned logistics team to build this itinerary, and that shows up everywhere in the trip — not as a footnote, but as the throughline.

This isn’t a hard-core adventure trip, but you’ll be outside and moving nearly every day — kayaking a wetland lagoon, hiking beneath 1,000-year-old trees, walking beside alpine lakes. Every hike on this trip is kept at a moderate level, and wherever we can, we’ll offer a gentler alternative alongside the fuller version, so you can choose your own pace. Nothing here is mandatory — you’re always free to sit one out — but we do encourage joining in, because in a country built on dramatic, hard-to-reach landscapes, the hikes are often the whole point.

NextTribe members get $100 off this (and every) trip

On every trip, bonding is quick and deep. You’ll see places and meet people you simply couldn’t on your own and feel comfortable from day one because the trip is hosted by a worldly, warm woman our age. Not a 26-year-old with a clipboard and attitude. One of us.

We keep groups small on purpose — which means this fills fast. Don’t be the one who waited too long.

~ Small groups—women 45+ ~ Solo travelers welcome

~ Led by a woman our age ~ Aging boldly since 2017

Solo Traveler? You're In The Right Place.

New Zealand is a big trip to take on alone — which is exactly why we built it the way we did.

You won’t be the only one. A good number of the women on this trip will be traveling solo. You’ll land in a group of women in the same boat, by design, not by accident.

Two islands, one steady pace. We’re covering serious ground — but we’ve built in the transitions, the free afternoons, and the slower days (hello, Wānaka wine country) so nothing feels like a scramble.

A host who’s one of us. Your NextTribe host isn’t a 26-year-old with a clipboard and attitude. She’s a woman your age, along for the entire journey, who knows exactly what it’s like to land somewhere solo and leave with a whole new group of friends.

Rooming made simple. Travel solo with your own room for a single supplement, or let us know if you’d like to be matched with a roommate from the group

What our Travelers Say

“I’m amazed how on each of my NextTribe trips, a bond is created immediately among a dozen women who have joined for a new experience and an adventure. It never feels as if you’re on a tour, but instead traveling the world with new friends.”

–Sherry T.

“I was totally shocked by how much I enjoyed my trip with this wonderful group of ladies. We all came from various parts of the country and various backgrounds, yet we bonded like old friends. This was my first trip with the group and I will definitely be doing it again!! I’m pretty much a loner but I felt right at home. Truly a great time every minute.”

–Christine B.

5 Things We Love About This Trip

It’s Hard to Keep it to Just 5

1. You get culture and intimate moments, not just the grand postcard version of New Zealand. Other tours go heavy on nature and adventure, but we know you want all the layers—places where we’ll see Maori traditions come to life, sophisticated cities that reflect the country’s rugged history and its melting pot present, and dinners where we eat like the locals (looking at you “Kiwi BBQ”). Plus, of course we’ll delve into the geothermally astounding North, and the wild, alpine South.

2. The women of New Zealand are woven into every leg. You’ll spend a morning with a Māori guide talking about growing up as a wahine whenua on tribal land, an afternoon in the care of local tribeswomen at a geothermal spa built on Ngāti Whakaue tradition, and time with a West Coast silversmith, a jet boat captain, and other women who’ve built remarkable lives in some of New Zealand’s wildest corners.

3. You don’t have to choose between comfort and wild. One day you’re soaking in a Māori-owned geothermal spa or eating at a sparkling harborfront restaurant; the next you’re kayaking a wetland the size of a small city, or riding a jet boat up a glacier-fed river. New Zealand does both extremes well, and this trip doesn’t make you pick.

4. The hiking is real, but it’s never a death march. Every hike is kept to a moderate grade, capped around three to four hours, and we’ll offer an easier version whenever the terrain allows. You’ll still stand under 1,000-year-old trees and beside glacier-carved lakes — you just won’t suffer for it.

5. Wine, twice, in two completely different landscapes. A Waiheke Island tasting overlooking the Hauraki Gulf to kick things off, and a Central Otago wine afternoon in the shadow of the Southern Alps to wind things down. Bonus round: an afternoon at Ayrburn, a beautifully restored 19th-century farm turned food-and-wine precinct outside Queenstown.

Questions We Hear All the Time

Do I need to come with someone?

Not at all. Plenty of NextTribe travelers come solo, and it tends to work out beautifully — this group bonds fast.

What fitness level do I need for the hikes?

Moderate. The longest hiking days run three to four hours, on well-established trails, with total elevation change in the range of a few hundred meters — nothing technical or exposed. We’ll always flag when a gentler option exists (a shorter loop instead of a steeper incline, for instance), and you’re never obligated to join a hike. That said, in a country this dramatic, the hikes are often how you actually earn the view — so we encourage giving them a try.

Is New Zealand safe and easy to navigate for women our age?

Yes — it’s consistently ranked among the world’s safest and most welcoming countries to visit, with excellent infrastructure even in remote areas. That said, this is still a trip with real distances and changeable weather, which is exactly why we travel as a group with a host and local guides throughout.

What’s the weather like in November?

Early summer, technically — but New Zealand weather is famously changeable, especially on the West Coast and in the mountains. Expect a range from mild and sunny to cool and rainy, sometimes in the same day. Layers are your friend.

Will I know anyone?

Probably not at the start. Almost certainly by day two. That’s just how this works.

What’s included?

All accommodations, all breakfasts, most of your lunches and dinners as listed in the day-by-day itinerary. Plus ground transportation, the internal flight from Auckland to Christchurch, guided excursions, and your NextTribe host throughout. International flights are not included.

What if I need to cancel?

Full refund up to 90 days out (except for your deposit, which can be applied to a future trip). We highly recommend travel protection insurance, and can point you toward options.

Our travelers love us (yay!)

Colleen M., California

What I love about the NextTribe trips is that there is so much camaraderie of other women that are like you, and then the fabulous things that the organizers puts together to give you that viewpoint, it’s awesome.

Courtney M., Texas

What I love about NextTribe trips is that you get the experience from an insider’s perspective—someone that has ties to the community and focused on building relationships from the start. I’ve been on a trip with another women’s travel group that dropped a guide in, not personally knowing anything about the locale, traditions, or culture. She was there to make sure you showed up on time, got on the bus, etc. With NextTribe, you feel like you’re having a personalized experience with your best girlfriends.

Donna B., Washington

I didn't know anyone going on the trip but that didn't stop me from signing up. I have learned that some of my life's greatest adventures have come from taking a risk and jumping in feet first. So glad I did with NextTribe! I may not have known anybody at the start, but now I feel like I know everybody.

Connie B., Pennsylvania

I love to meet and interact with strong, mature women from across the country as we learn together.

Leslie M., Georgia

I always come by myself on NextTribe trips because I like to meet super fun and interesting women. We're always doing fun and interesting things in great cities that you couldn't do on your own because you wouldn't know the people or places or the insiders.

Teresa S., Kentucky

NextTribe fills the need I have to travel with older interesting women who are curious about the world and want to share the journey.

Frequently asked questions

What’s different about your trips?

We curate trips specifically for curious, engaged women over 45. You’re pretty well assured that your fellow travelers will be a lot like you–since you’ve all responded to the idea of “aging boldly.”. That means built-in compatibility in your small group, including the woman who is leading the adventure.. In addition to specializing in group travel for people who don’t normally like group travel, we also pride ourselves on creating experiences that allow you to interact with local women or get deeper into the culture than you would if you planned the trip yourself.

Where do you go?

We have a wide range of weekend jaunts here in the U.S. for those who want a quick getaway. We also love taking women to Mexico, where founder Jeannie Ralston used to live. We’re always talking about pushing boundaries, and we’re doing that in the geographic sense too. For those with more time, we offer trips all over Europe, to India, Vietnam, Peru (for a hike on the inca Trail to Machu Picchu). Soon, our travelers will be getting passport stamps in even more countries on six continents. Be saving those frequent flier miles!

What do you mean by transformational travel?

NextTribe is affiliated with the Transformational Travel Council, an international group of travel professionals dedicated to making the world a better place, one trip and one traveler at a time. We recognize that travelers, especially post-pandemic, are looking for more than just a date and a destination. They can shop for that anywhere online. Our community honors the intention behind a traveler’s investment in a trip. Our travelers want to have fun (we do too!) and to travel with a sense of purpose and belonging. That’s why we go to great lengths to provide ways for women to self-select by reading the articles in our magazine and the content of our website. If you like what you see, you’re likely to be a NextTribe traveler, and we look forward to seeing you on a trip soon!

What if I travel solo?

If you really prefer to book your travel yourself and go it alone, we applaud you. That’s brave and bold and we would never try to talk you out of it. But our trips are designed so that even a woman who’s used to traveling alone, or someone shy about meeting new people, will feel comfortable in our group. Our trip leaders are there to “read the room” and make sure everyone feels included and respected.

What if I don’t like group travel?

We don’t either! Not the way most groups do it. If you feel like doing what the group is doing, great! Join us for dinner or just some of the activities. All the benefits of solo travel and the comfort of being with a group. Our groups are small (normally around 12 to 14 women) and in most situations, you are free to opt out of an activity. We figure you’re grown-ass women who know what’s best for you.

What’s the price range of your trips?

We are committed to providing what we call “affordable-luxury” travel. Don’t expect
the Four Seasons, but who wants to stay in a gilded bubble anyhow? We always look for good value and offer wonderful hotels and memorable experiences that won’t break the bank and will get you closer to how locals live. Our prices depend on the length of the
trip and the destination. We offer domestic trips for under $2,000 for a shared room, which we encourage. If you don’t have a roommate we will match you with someone. Sometimes this has resulted in lasting friendships with new travel buddies., Some of
our longer trips–two weeks in India or Vietnam, for example–will cost between
$4,800 and $6,000.

What’s included in the price?

Our trips cover most everything you’ll need to dive into a destination. Hotels and most meals, plus special experiences such as hands-on classes and sessions with local artists, writers or entrepreneurs are almost always included, but each trip is different so please be sure to read The Experience and the itinerary. We occasionally have an add-on for an extra price, but those are clearly designated. What’s not covered as a rule are airfare, alcohol and tips.

Do you have payment plans?

We sure do. It’s easy to pay for our trips by setting up automatic credit card charges at regular intervals, interest free. Think of it as the layaway plan to feed your soul.

How do I get trip discounts?

Our NextTribe members get a discount on every trip. Plus, members are the first to hear about new trips and receive upgrades on rooms if they’re available. Check out our three different membership levels here.

What’s the average age of women on the trips?

We welcome all women over 45, but most of our travelers are in the 50 to 65 age range. More important than age is the spirit of the traveler–her curiosity about the world, and her eagerness to embrace new opportunities. We’ve found women of any age with those qualities fit in well with our groups.

What’s the activity level of the trips?

Most of our trips are geared for active travelers who like to walk–a rating of 3 on our 1-5 rating scale. Here are some examples of how we rate. A designation of 1 would be our beach trips, where it’s up to you if you’d like to stroll down the beach, or play in the waves or walk around the small town. Trips where we have dedicated transportation for much of the time (such as India) are a 2; Paris is a 3 because we believe the best way to appreciate a city is to view it on foot. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a 4, because you’ll be walking up some hills (at 6,000 feet altitude) and occasionally on cobblestone sidewalks. Our Inca trail trip is a 5, as are our more adventurous outdoor trips.
