Lush and Leisurely India: Discovering Kerala
At a Glance
Slow Travel in Lush Kerala
Many tours of India take you on such a mad-dash through cities and temples, you can barely remember what happened two days ago, much less the start of the trip. This is not the NextTribe way. This is not the way you immerse yourself in a culture.
We are offering “slow travel” through our favorite part of India. The state of Kerala—often described as a natural paradise–is verdant and vibrant, filled with tea and spice plantations, teeming with wildlife— tigers, elephants, monkeys and more— with vast networks of streams and canals made famous by the recent bestselling book Covenant of Water.
To learn more about this trip, you can watch a recording our our Trip Preview Here.
We have designed an itinerary that avoids the nerve-jangling, chaotic and crowded cities. Instead, we’ll visit local beaches, rivers, canals, mountains, parks, gardens, rice paddies, farms and villages where the natural beauty and rural traditions are thriving: areas that many travelers to India miss. We’ll meet local women who will tell us about their lives, their passions and hopes, and show us their crafts and art.
REMEMBER: We offer easy interest-free monthly payments to make our trips more accessible.

5 Reasons We Love This Trip
- The pace. A gentler introduction to the wonders of India. Maybe some people think quantity—all the cities on the must-see list—will give them a better sense of India. We believe it’s taking a deep dive into one stellar location—think of it as quality–that provides a truer understanding of a place and its people.
- Nature. Kerala is known for its parks and preserves. We’ll spend time in the mountains, where we’ll go rafting, see elephants strolling by a lakeside, and go on nature walks to see monkeys, reptiles, and—just possibly—a tiger.
- Culture of all kinds. Not only will we learn about the ancient ways of life in many of these small communities, we will also get to explore a modern aspect of Indian culture. On our two-night tour of the backwater canals in a luxurious house boat, we’ll hear from a local expert who will talk about Covenant of Water (set in this very region) as we cruise.
- Hands-on experiences: From a doll-making workshop to tea-leaf picking to cooking a meal that will be served in the traditional manner—on banana leaves.
- Celebrating women. We will visit Paliam Palace, a part of the lost heritage of Muziris, which upheld the matrilineal line. We’ll meet women workers on farms and in weaving co-operatives. We’ll step into the kitchen of a mother and her daughter-in-law, who have maintained a thriving restaurant and organic farm after the loss of their son/husband. And of course, as we always do—we will toast to the bonds that form when like-minded women gather with open minds to explore the world.
Meet Your Trip Leader--Jeannie Ralston

On a recent visit to India, a guide told Jeannie Ralston that conceptions of India by the outside world are often formed by movies, especially “Slum Dog Millionaire.” When she heard this, Ralston realized her own perception of India was formed by watching “The Jungle Book.” That’s why she was so drawn to Kerala. With its lush forests, it reminded her of the India of her childhood imagination. “This is the part of India where I felt my body relax, my breathing slow. This is the part of India I love more than any other and the one I want to show NextTribers.”
This trip exceeded all my expectations! It was a great group of women and many lifetime memories and friendships were formed!

Sunday, Jan. 11th: Welcome to Kerala

We will begin our trip in Cherai. We will be staying in two different hotels, each one is beautiful and relaxing. There are no activities planned for this day. This is a day for recovering from jet lag and getting ready for exploring this gorgeous area.
This evening, we’ll enjoy dinner together with time to get acquainted and oriented to the rest of the trip.
Monday, Jan. 12th: Weaving and Dolls

Today we’ll take a day trip to the village of Chendamangalam, a weaving village deeply rooted in cultural heritage. At the weaving workshops we visit you will get to see the process up close, from dyeing and weaving on the handloom to the showroom floor. After the weaving experience, you will get a hands on experience in doll making and you’ll have the chance to create your own baggage tag.
After a traditional lunch at a family home, we visit Paliam Palace. The palace is steeped in the rich history of the Paliath Achans, a lineage the upheld thematrilineal system which was traditionally practiced among Kerala’s Nair community and certain aristocratic families. In this system, inheritance and family titles passed through the female line, with property and titles transferred to the daughters rather than sons.
Tuesday, Jan. 13th: Up to the Mountains

Today we’ll travel 5 hours by bus to Munnar, in the Western Ghat Mountains and the center of tea growing in the region. Munnar is magically ethereal in every facet. Undulating hills cloaked in emerald greenery, mist-kissed valleys, sprawling tea plantations, cascading waterfalls and the crisp mountain air together weave a tapestry of beauty like no other.
For a little adventure, we’ll be picked up and transported in jeeps to our hotel.
Our hotel, Windemere Estate, is a former plantation and is perched on the edge of a mountain, which means there are incredible views. The air here is crisp and clean, the temperature pleasant and the views spectacular. The breeze carries the aroma of coffee, cardamom and tea.
Wednesday, Jan. 14th: Exploring Munnar

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we’ll head to a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for differently abled people. There we’ll have the chance to participate in a textile art workshop.
The afternoon is for exploring on your own. We suggest rambling walks around the plantation and the surrounding tea gardens, a dip in the pool with the best view in the world, or cozying up with a book in the quiet library.
Later in the day, there is an option for a tour of a cardamom plantation.
Thursday, Jan. 15th: Tea Time

Today, we’ll immerse ourselves in the tea plantations of Munnar. That means getting right in the middle of the sprawling velvety green hills that we see all around us.
Depending on the availability of the female tea pickers, we will join them in tea plucking and spend some time getting to know their children, witnessing the routine in an effort to undersatnd the day to day life of the women on the plantations. After a stroll through the residential quarters we will enjoy a cup of tea from the village shop.
This afternoon is spent at a tea factory where we’ll be educated about the complete processing of tea. Once back at our hotel, we will blend and enjoy our own tea in a fitting ceremony that will bring together all that we’ve learned over the day.
This evening, there is an option to do a herpetology tour with an expert guide. You will learn about frogs, snakes, lizards, and other reptiles. It is an interesting tour for guests who love photography. The tour takes about 3 to 4 hours and is done late in the evening, after dinner.
Friday, Jan. 16th: On to Thekkady

Today we travel 5 hours by bus from Munnar to Thekkady, a small town in the Western Ghats. This area is known for its abundance of wildlife, which we will certainly be exploring.
You will have free time in the afternoon for exploring the shops and streets of Thekkady on your own.
Saturday, Jan. 17th: Spa and Spices

This morning you’ll have time for yourselves, to explore the property or to the spa or do some yoga.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit a pepper plantation, picking peppercorns and learning about this centuries-old plant that started the spice trade. At the plantation, the scent of pepper mingles with the fresh mountain air.
Afterward, we will head to a cardamom grading factory and enjoy tea and snacks with the planter’s family.
Sunday, Jan. 18th: Periyar Tiger Preserve and Elephants

After breakfast, we’ll head to the forest reserve for some adventure in the well-known Periyar National Park. One of the finest wildlife reserves in India, the sanctuary is spread across 925 square kilometers. Believed to be among the oldest tiger reserves in the country, it has an incredible diversity of flora and fauna.
After hiking to Periyar Lake, we’ll board a bamboo raft and get a panoramic view of the surrounding forested hills. Out on the lake, we’ll look for elephants, guar and sambar deer near the shore. On our last trip here, we got a good view of an elephant family.
On the way back to the hotel, we’ll meet some elephants. Depending on availability, we’ll have a chance to bathe an elephant.
Monday, Jan. 19th: The Dreamy Backwaters

Today, we’ll drive 5 hours to the town of Alleppey, where we’ll board our own houseboat for two days of exploring. Kerala is famous for its serene backwaters, a network of canals, rivers, and lakes that stretch over 900 kilometers. Think of these houseboats as floating luxury hotels of a design that dates back to their origins as a cargo vessel used to take rice from the interior to the port of Kochi.
We’ll be heading through Kuttanad, often referred to as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala.” This region is known for its vast expanses of paddy fields, which are situated below sea level. The unique geography of Kuttanad creates a mesmerizing landscape, where you can witness farmers cultivating rice in waterlogged fields.
The first night, we’ll tie up in the town of Kavalam, where you can see many temples, paddy fields. A village walk will show you what life is like in a small Indian community.
Tuesday, Jan. 20th: Entering "Covenant of Water"

During our time on the boat, we will be joined by a local professor who has studied the bestselling book Covenant of Water, which is placed exactly in these backwaters. She will talk about how life was portrayed in the book, and how these rhythms have changed–or not–in modern times.
After lunch, the cruise proceeds to the Kainakary, where 5 rivers drain into idyllic Vembanad Lake. Kainakary is a pastoral setting that allows us a glimpse of rural India at its finest. After a stop over at the ancestral home of a local saint, we’ll continue cruising towards Nedumudy, where we’ll dock. Then, we’ll have free time for a village walk or some relaxing on the boat.
Wednesday, Jan. 21st: Lunch with Locals and on to the Coast

After disembarking from our houseboat, we’ll travel by bus and ferry to a launching point of a different type of vessel–a small country boat, pushed through the canals by a Mathai, or boatman. He’ll describe the plants, trees, and people along the way.
We will then take tuk-tuks to the home of Krishna Kumari, who will cook local vegetarian dishes and serve the food like locals eat on banana leaves. The most interesting part of the visit is learning about the old house and seeing traditional utensils.
Krishna Kumari will make special arrangements for the food to be served in her garden. It will be similar to many celebrations in the village.
That evening we will check into the lovely Marari Beach Hotel.
Thursday, Jan. 22nd: Beach Fun

Today, relax on the beach or around the pool. Each guest will receive a 60-minute spa treatment at the hotel (included).
If you’re up for it, you can take part in a 2-hour tuk-tuck tour of the nearby village tour of Mararikulam today. The tour covers Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple, Kanichukulangara Devi Temple, visits to a Khadi weaving unit, a coconut oil extracting center run by a local family, as well as a small-scale coir mat weaving center.
Friday, Jan. 23rd: Cooking Class on a Farm

More prime beach/spa time. We’ll take a break at midday for an excursion to Philipkutty’s Farm, which is acclaimed for its organic, sustainable food production. The farm is run by a mother and daughter-in-law pair who kept their business going after the untimely passing of their son/husband.
We’ll get to participate in a cooking class and enjoy a homemade lunch.
We’ll end our tour with a farewell dinner at the Marari Beach Hotel.
Saturday, Jan. 24th: Farewell!!
Today, we’ll say goodbye to sumptuous Kerala. One transfer will take the group on the 1 1/2 hour ride to the Kochi International Airport, for flights home or to other parts of India.
Logistics
Flights: Fly into and out of Kochi (Cochin) Cochin International Airport. We will try and coordinate arrival flights to group together transfers. On departure, there will be one transfer from our beach hotel to the airport.
We will connect everyone on the trip via a private whatsapp group once the trip is full. Here, you can communicate with one another to make travel plans etc.
All transportation on the ground will be in a private, air conditioned mini bus.
We will be accompanied for the duration of the trip by an English speaking guide with local expert guides as needed.
Travel Insurance is required for this trip. The sooner you get your policy, the better deal you will get.

Our travelers love us (yay!)
Colleen M., California
What I love about the NextTribe trips is that there is so much camaraderie of other women that are like you, and then the fabulous things that the organizers puts together to give you that viewpoint, it’s awesome.
”
Courtney M., Texas
What I love about NextTribe trips is that you get the experience from an insider’s perspective—someone that has ties to the community and focused on building relationships from the start. I’ve been on a trip with another women’s travel group that dropped a guide in, not personally knowing anything about the locale, traditions, or culture. She was there to make sure you showed up on time, got on the bus, etc. With NextTribe, you feel like you’re having a personalized experience with your best girlfriends.
”
Donna B., Washington
I didn't know anyone going on the trip but that didn't stop me from signing up. I have learned that some of my life's greatest adventures have come from taking a risk and jumping in feet first. So glad I did with NextTribe! I may not have known anybody at the start, but now I feel like I know everybody.
”
Connie B., Pennsylvania
I love to meet and interact with strong, mature women from across the country as we learn together.

I always come by myself on NextTribe trips because I like to meet super fun and interesting women. We're always doing fun and interesting things in great cities that you couldn't do on your own because you wouldn't know the people or places or the insiders.
”
Teresa S., Kentucky
NextTribe fills the need I have to travel with older interesting women who are curious about the world and want to share the journey.

Frequently asked questions
What’s different about your trips?
We curate trips specifically for curious, engaged women over 45. You’re pretty well assured that your fellow travelers will be a lot like you–since you’ve all responded to the idea of “aging boldly.”. That means built-in compatibility in your small group, including the woman who is leading the adventure.. In addition to specializing in group travel for people who don’t normally like group travel, we also pride ourselves on creating experiences that allow you to interact with local women or get deeper into the culture than you would if you planned the trip yourself.
Where do you go?
We have a wide range of weekend jaunts here in the U.S. for those who want a quick getaway. We also love taking women to Mexico, where founder Jeannie Ralston used to live. We’re always talking about pushing boundaries, and we’re doing that in the geographic sense too. For those with more time, we offer trips all over Europe, to India, Vietnam, Peru (for a hike on the inca Trail to Machu Picchu). Soon, our travelers will be getting passport stamps in even more countries on six continents. Be saving those frequent flier miles!
What do you mean by transformational travel?
NextTribe is affiliated with the Transformational Travel Council, an international group of travel professionals dedicated to making the world a better place, one trip and one traveler at a time. We recognize that travelers, especially post-pandemic, are looking for more than just a date and a destination. They can shop for that anywhere online. Our community honors the intention behind a traveler’s investment in a trip. Our travelers want to have fun (we do too!) and to travel with a sense of purpose and belonging. That’s why we go to great lengths to provide ways for women to self-select by reading the articles in our magazine and the content of our website. If you like what you see, you’re likely to be a NextTribe traveler, and we look forward to seeing you on a trip soon!
What if I travel solo?
If you really prefer to book your travel yourself and go it alone, we applaud you. That’s brave and bold and we would never try to talk you out of it. But our trips are designed so that even a woman who’s used to traveling alone, or someone shy about meeting new people, will feel comfortable in our group. Our trip leaders are there to “read the room” and make sure everyone feels included and respected.
What if I don’t like group travel?
We don’t either! Not the way most groups do it. If you feel like doing what the group is doing, great! Join us for dinner or just some of the activities. All the benefits of solo travel and the comfort of being with a group. Our groups are small (normally around 12 to 14 women) and in most situations, you are free to opt out of an activity. We figure you’re grown-ass women who know what’s best for you.
What’s the price range of your trips?
We are committed to providing what we call “affordable-luxury” travel. Don’t expect
the Four Seasons, but who wants to stay in a gilded bubble anyhow? We always look for good value and offer wonderful hotels and memorable experiences that won’t break the bank and will get you closer to how locals live. Our prices depend on the length of the
trip and the destination. We offer domestic trips for under $2,000 for a shared room, which we encourage. If you don’t have a roommate we will match you with someone. Sometimes this has resulted in lasting friendships with new travel buddies., Some of
our longer trips–two weeks in India or Vietnam, for example–will cost between
$4,800 and $6,000.
What’s included in the price?
Our trips cover most everything you’ll need to dive into a destination. Hotels and most meals, plus special experiences such as hands-on classes and sessions with local artists, writers or entrepreneurs are almost always included, but each trip is different so please be sure to read The Experience and the itinerary. We occasionally have an add-on for an extra price, but those are clearly designated. What’s not covered as a rule are airfare, alcohol and tips.
Do you have payment plans?
We sure do. It’s easy to pay for our trips by setting up automatic credit card charges at regular intervals, interest free. Think of it as the layaway plan to feed your soul.
How do I get trip discounts?
Our NextTribe members get a discount on every trip. Plus, members are the first to hear about new trips and receive upgrades on rooms if they’re available. Check out our three different membership levels here.
What’s the average age of women on the trips?
We welcome all women over 45, but most of our travelers are in the 50 to 65 age range. More important than age is the spirit of the traveler–her curiosity about the world, and her eagerness to embrace new opportunities. We’ve found women of any age with those qualities fit in well with our groups.
What’s the activity level of the trips?
Most of our trips are geared for active travelers who like to walk–a rating of 3 on our 1-5 rating scale. Here are some examples of how we rate. A designation of 1 would be our beach trips, where it’s up to you if you’d like to stroll down the beach, or play in the waves or walk around the small town. Trips where we have dedicated transportation for much of the time (such as India) are a 2; Paris is a 3 because we believe the best way to appreciate a city is to view it on foot. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a 4, because you’ll be walking up some hills (at 6,000 feet altitude) and occasionally on cobblestone sidewalks. Our Inca trail trip is a 5, as are our more adventurous outdoor trips.
