What We Learn from TikTok’s “Turning My Mom into Me”

In the "turning my mom into me" challenge on social media, moms dress up like their daughters and demonstrate something important about aging.

We’ve all been warned over and over: You’ll look ridiculous if you try to dress too young. Even if you’re bold and enlightened and have a boss style, you will most likely pick up a piece of clothing at some point and wonder, “Can I still wear this?”

Having an even greater impact than the new accoutrements of youth is the playfulness, the strutting, and the bold posture.

But a new trend on TikTok® is showing that, with the right attitude, older women can wear most anything they want. For this “turning my mom into me” trend, a user’s mom walks into the room in her normal clothing—most often sweats, pjs, or something stretchy and inoffensive—walks out, then catwalks back in wearing clothes that her daughter would wear. The soundtrack is “I Wish” by Skee-Lo, and the mom always does some posing and mugging.

The daughter’s clothes, accessories, and hairstyles certainly make the moms look younger. In some instances, you’ll swear it’s impossible that they have a teenage daughter. But having an even greater impact than the new accoutrements of youth is the playfulness, the strutting, and the bold posture.

“We see the mums transform from homely, middle-aged women to literal, gorgeous 20-year-olds,” writes Hannah Van de Peer on the site The Tab. “It essentially gives me hope that I’ll still be able to pull off a fishnet tight, hooped earring, or Afghan coat when I’m 55.”

Having Fun

From mild-mannered to hottie

Some of the most popular videos are the ones showing the greatest change. On December 21st, TikToker @chr1sti1na posted a video showing her rather mousy mom walking in carrying a vacuum cleaner for her “before” shot. In her “after” shot, the mom comes back in wearing a little crop top, baggy white pants, a bucket hat and a cheeky smile (top photo, right). The video got more than 15 million views in a day.

After [Lizzo’s mom] is Lizzo-fied, she’s looking festive and glam.

Other videos show mild-mannered moms reborn with shaggy white boots and hot pants or sequined, skinny sheaths with chunky sunglasses. One mom is shown in three different outfits, looking cuter and more pleased with herself in each one. One gray-haired mom is a priest, with the white collar and dark jacket; several users do the trick with their grandmothers, one of whom ends up in black leather and a halter.

Even the singer Lizzo joined in the fun. For her take, we first see her mother in a t-shirt, sneakers, and glasses, but after she’s Lizzo-fied, she’s looking festive and glam in a bright red one-piece (top photo, left), a matching red lip, and some adorable space buns atop her head, just like her daughter.

The Upshot

Naughty and nice

Women who have done the like-daughter-like-mom switcheroo told news outlets that it served as a reminder that women can wear what they want at any age, despite being pressured to dress a certain way as they grow older. “I think it was empowering to be able to wear something that I felt really confident in,” Heather Brown, 41, told NBC News, noting that the trend was also a way to “reflect on who you are and where you’re at.”

‘Once the moms change into what their daughters wear . . . all of them have this spark of confidence. They look happier. They’re glowing, basically.’

Daughters also saw the significance. Bella Ramirez, 20, said that the “turning my mom into me” challenge felt like a shift in attitudes in how moms should dress, according to NBC News. She dressed her mom Edsyl, 48, in a crop top, low-rise jeans, a black jacket and a small purse (top photo, center) in a video that received more than 1.6 million views. She thinks younger generations view this trend as a glimpse into the future and what they could look like as mothers.

“I think this has to be one of my favorite trends on TikTok that I’ve participated in,” Ramirez said. “I think this is very empowering. I love that . . . moms are getting attention, and it’s also super positive.” She goes on to say that she thinks one reason the trend is so popular is because “once the moms change into what their daughters wear, I feel like all of them have this spark of confidence. They look happier. They’re glowing, basically.”

The lesson here is that we can liberate ourselves, dress how we want to, adopt a bit of swagger. As we at NextTribe say, “Aging is a fact of life. Aging Boldly is a state of mind.” Or even a state of dress.
