The “Still Got It” Shot: The New Way to Celebrate a Big Birthday?

Have you noticed how some stars are flaunting it on their birthdays? We applaud their boldness, but we like something else even better.

This week, Salma Hayek was the latest star to celebrate a milestone birthday in a way fitting our social-media-centric times.

Marking her 55th spin around the sun on Thursday, she posted a photo posingin a bright blue V-neck one-piece while standing in the ocean and gazing out to sea. Her famous curves are on full display in the shot, curves that are frankly out of proportion. How can anyone with such a chest have such slim hips? (Yes, we know one way, but Hayek has consistently denied it.)

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard star captioned the swimsuit snap: “Happy 55th birthday to me looking forward to new adventures #grateful.”

Brooke and Padma Too

Brooke Shields, at 55, and Padma Lakshmi, at 50.

We’ve noticed many celebrities doing the bikini/bathing suit shot in honor of their birthdays, almost as if it’s a rite of passage when you reach a certain age.

There’s no expiration dates for women.

For her own 55th birthday in May 2020, Brooke Shields appeared in her Instagram feed wearing a neon orange bikini, and with true confidence, she showed front and back sides so we could see that she looks good coming and going. Brava!

Last year at this time, Padma Lakshmi celebrated her 50th by posting a series of photos on Twitter of herself in a skinny pink bikini. (Actually Hayek and Lakshmi have birthdays one day apart.) She’s walking on the beach, smiling as a wave breaks on her, playing in the surf. “50 is the new 30, feel like I’m just getting started,” she wrote with her pictures.

We’re not crazy about Lakshmi’s thinking on age—that any age is the new anything. Fifty is 50, we believe, with no need to qualify it or dress it up. But we agree whole heartedly with the “just getting started idea.” We feel that down to our bellybutton (whether we choose to show it off or not).

Say it, Salma

You know what we also like? These comments from Hayek about aging. “There’s no expiration dates for women. That has to go. Because you can kick ass at any age. You can hold your own at any age, you can dream at any age, you can be romantic at age,” she told Red Table Talk.

You can kick ass at any age.

“We have the right to be loved for who we are at the place that we are,” she continued. “We’re not just here to make babies, we’re not just here to baby the man. We’re not just here to service everything and everyone around us and then when the kids go away … it’s almost like expiration date for you as a woman. It’s a misunderstanding that has been going around for centuries.”

Even more than seeing Hayek in that swimsuit, hearing those sentiments make us say, “Wowza!”
