Meet First Time Traveler: Alice Angier

This active Coloradan is determined to stay fit and strong so she can keep traveling. Here's why it's so important to her.

“The healthier and stronger you are, the easier traveling is as you grow older,” says Alice Angier. Living a healthy lifestyle is something Angier prioritizes more, now that she’s “in between opportunities,” as she likes to say, describing her post-retirement life.

Alice focuses her time creating strength training classes for older women at her local gym in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, because she’s passionate about staying active and strong. She believes it’s never too late to jump right into weightlifting and exercise, or for Alice, jumping into group travel for the first time. Not knowing anyone on her first NextTribe trip to Portugal last month, she decided now was a better time than any to try out group travel.

NextTribe takes small groups of women ages 45+ on fun, immersive trips across the country and around the world. Learn more here.

She enjoyed her trip so much that she says she’s already shopping through the 2026 calendar of trips. With a potential second trip in her future, she says there are some tips she picked up from more seasoned NextTribe travelers that she’ll apply to her next trip. Such as arriving a few days early. The extra time allows your body to adjust to the new environment before the real adventure starts. That way, you won’t have to worry about pesky jet lag while trying to enjoy the company of new friends and sights!

Where do you reside?

Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a small tourist town three hours West of Denver, famous for its hot springs.

Marital Status?

Married

Occupation?

Sort of retired, or as I like to say, “between opportunities”

What convinced you to take your first trip with NextTribe?

My spouse is less interested in travel; a friend told me about NextTribe, and I liked their mission. They offered what I was looking for: a virtual community with travel options; planned itineraries, safety in numbers, and the opportunity to meet new people and see new places in a small-group setting.

Have you ever traveled in a group of all women? If yes, how does it differ from traveling solo or with a partner?

This was my first all-women trip. Portugal felt like the perfect first trip to jump right into, being so culturally rich. I loved the cooking and tile-making classes.

What were you most looking forward to about your first trip?

I keep a packing list that I constantly update with changes from previous travel; when it’s time to pack, I find it far less stressful.

Experiencing a different culture. When I travel, I like to avoid touristy things and get an authentic experience.

Favorite place to visit and why?

I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Antarctica with my uncle in 2001.  Nothing compares.

What’s your dream travel destination?

Singapore or Japan.

Do you believe in wearing sweatpants on the plane? If not, what’s your go-to outfit?

I don’t! For long flights, I prefer elastic-waist, wrinkle-free pants from Vuori or Athleta, a tank, a long-sleeve top, a denim jacket or puffy, and always a big scarf!

Do you have a favorite souvenir from your travels?

It’s not a souvenir, but a framed photo of my spouse and me at the top of Huayna Picchu, the mountain that rises over Machu Picchu in Peru. I discovered after the fact that the hike is known as the “Stairs of Death” and is listed as one of the most dangerous hikes in the world! I was happy to survive.

Do you have any travel rituals or tips that you swear by?

I’m a list maker! I keep a packing list that I constantly update with changes from previous travel; when it’s time to pack, I find it far less stressful. And I always take a weighted eye mask. Not great for the plane, but it blocks the light and calms me for sleep in new environments.
