Meet Our Spirited “Day of the Dead” Trip Leader

Who can resist traveling with NextTribe guide Jennifer? No one! Because she's all about fun and respect when leading our Day of the Dead trips.

Growing up in a small town outside of Houston, Texas, Jennifer Gongaware would often daydream about being a bird. And she certainly has flown! When it came time to pick a college, she chose the University of Hawaii, thus beginning her adventurous travel streak; she’s also been a flight attendant for decades. So it’s no wonder that she delights in her role as a NextTribe trip leader, guiding women to far-flung destinations.

NextTribe takes small groups of women ages 45+ on unforgettable, immersive tours around the world. Learn about our Day of the Dead trip next October here.

Her emphasis on fun makes her perfect to leader for NextTribe’s signature trip to San Miguel de Allende, for the Día de los Muertos. (aka our Day of the Dead tour) She’s most excited to share all the personal tidbits that she’s picked up during her visits there as a NextTribe traveler, and most importantly, make sure that every single person has the absolute best time. It’s an especially meaningful trip for her: Even before going to Mexico, Gongaware kept a small altar in her home to honor those she had lost. “I love the storytelling and honoring of the dead during the Día de los Muertos celebration,” she says. “What makes this trip so special is that we’re sharing the space with those we’ve lost and celebrating them with these wonderful women.” Learn more about what makes this awesome guide tick.

How did you become a trip leader?

Jeannie Ralston [NextTribe’s founder and CEO] and I met in Blanco, Texas, when our boys were babies. Fast-forward 23 years, and I joined a NextTribe trip to San Miguel de Allende—and the rest is history!

What’s your favorite aspect of being a trip leader?

People and their stories are fascinating to me. But I also have customer service in my blood, lol. It brings me great pleasure to see people have a good time.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Fun and more fun, but always with ease.

Favorite place to visit and why?

Gosh, have I been there yet? I loved the Galapagos, I loved traveling with my children to Iceland. Thailand was fascinating. Oh, and I was in awe in a kayak in the remote waters of Alaska. Snowy mountains or a beautiful beach are also favs.

What’s your dream travel destination?

New Zealand, I want to stay there for several months to truly explore the islands.

Do you believe in wearing sweatpants on the plane? If not, what’s your go-to outfit?

I’m not a sweatpants type of woman. My preferred travel attire is a long, loose dress with a wrap or jacket, and a scarf. Stylish, of course!

Do you have a favorite souvenir from your travels?

My photos of my trips and my memories are my favorite souvenirs.

What is your favorite place or experience to share with NextTribe groups?

I have to answer this one in all caps: I LOVED CUBA, and I LOVE SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE!

What’s your favorite thing about leading a group of all women?

To see everyone share experiences and form organic friendships. With NextTribe, you always have the chance to see these women on another trip!

How would you describe the vibe of a NextTribe trip?

Fun is the first thing that comes to mind, truly! Fun, interesting, well-curated, and unforgettable!
