In this regular feature, we share stories of women who followed a new passion. We hope these stories may provide the insight and encouragement for others to try new paths.
Today, we’re happy to highlight the work of Amanda Schaefer of Ambler, PA.
What kind of work or passion are you pursuing now?
I am a two-time author and co-owner of my own publishing company with my son.
How old were you when you began in this new direction?
What did you do before you made this change?
I was a full-time nanny, recently divorced due to my now ex-husband’s addiction issues.
What prompted you to make this change?
My son and I healed after my ex-husband finally left for good. I went to New York University for dramatic writing, and my son is a graphic designer so we said let’s partner up and start a company.
What from your previous work or life situation helped you in your reinvention?
I learned to be persistent and tenacious about what we needed to be healthy and to openly share my brokenness with others as a means of connection and encouragement.
What were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome?
I had no idea what I was doing, but I have always been creative and resourceful and a storyteller.
How are you overcoming them?
I investigated the steps and boldly took them one at a time to achieve my goals.
What fears have you faced?
Can I do this? Am I good enough? Does anyone care what I have to say?
What kind of support did you receive in your reinvention?
Amazing support from my family and friends. Everyone believed I could succeed.
How have you grown or how has your life improved as a result of taking on this new pursuit?
How haven’t I grown is the question! I am stronger, more confident and basically not afraid to try new things. I believe in myself and my unique point of view
What advice would you give to other women at this age who are looking to reinvent themselves?
If you have the desire in your heart to do something do it! The worst that can happen is you need to make some adjustments and try again, but the best that can happen is that you can indeed do it!
