We’d like to send a loud, spirited, collective chorus of “Happy Birthday” to amazing women who are hitting milestones this season.
Celebrity Summer Birthdays
Shelley Duvall turned the big 7-0 on July 7th. You know her well from her iconic, terrified role in The Shining as well as Popeye (could anyone be a more perfect Olive Oyl than this lithe, wide-eyed actor?), The Portrait of a Lady, Time Bandits, and Annie Hall. She’s had a bumpy time of late—appearing on a Dr. Phil special)—but we wish her the best!
Mavis Staples, whose legendary R&B talent has enchanted us as part of the Staple Singers and as a solo artist, turned 80 on July 10th. Already inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Mavis is also an actor and a civil rights activist. Many happy returns, Mavis!
Jennifer Lopez, aka JLo, celebrated her 50th on July 24th. This incredible singer/dancer/actor sets a great example of age being just a number. She is giving high-energy, work-that-body performances at sold-out arenas everywhere. This is what being a half-century old can look like!
Rosanna Arquette, the woman who inspired one of the favorite power ballads of our youth, turns 60 on August 10th. She’s had memorable turns on TV (from Ray Donovan to The L Word), to movies like Desperately Seeking Susan, After Hours, and Pulp Fiction. We appreciate her political activism, too.
Rebecca De Mornay also joins the “I’m 60” society on August 29th of this year. Currently on TV’s Jessica Jones, she also was on The Practice and ER as well as all kinds of movies, from her make-me-a-star role in Risky Business to The Hand that Rocks the Cradle to Wedding Crashers.
Shelley Long turns 70 on August 23rd. Is it possible to see her face and not hear the theme song from the long-running TV hit Cheers? Probably not. The Emmy-winner also made her mark in movies like Irreconcilable Differences, The Money Pit, Outrageous Fortune, and Troop Beverly Hills. More recently, she’s DeDe Pritchett on Modern Family—good to see her back on the screen.
Lily Tomlin (pictured up top) celebrates her 80th on September 1st. Of course, we love her on Grace and Frankie, Eastbound & Down, The West Wing, Desperate Housewives, and a million other things, all the way back to Laugh-In. Happiest of birthdays to Lily and all the rest!
