Two Icons Are Turning 70 (And One May be Our Next President)

A presidential candidate and an Oscar winner share a birthday. These two female icons are turning 70!

June 22nd seems like a very auspicious date to be born, especially in 1949. Two American icons were born that day.

Meryl Streep, known to many as the “best actress of her generation,” is currently playing a wicked role on season two of HBO’s addictive Big Little Lies. She’s set a record number of Oscar nominations (an astounding 21) and has won three; when it comes to Golden Globes, she’s been nominated 31 times and taken home a statuette eight times (we wonder where she keeps that pile-up of gold). Equally adept on stage or the screen, Streep has given our generation many iconic movie roles—from Sophie’s Choice to Mamma Mia!—and is recognized for her remarkable facility with foreign accents, from Danish to Polish and beyond. She’s been married to artist Don Gummer for 40-plus years and has four kids. May they all have a wonderful time celebrating the 70th with the Marvelous Ms. Meryl.

Mrs. President?

Also turning the Big Seven-Oh on the 22nd is presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. Serving as the senior senator from Massachusetts since 2013, she’s enjoyed a prominent career as a legal scholar, having taught at Harvard University, among others, and authored three books.

As she now digs in during her quest to be the Democratic nominee for president, we hope she has a time for some birthday celebrations.

Warren is well-known for her focus on consumer protection, economic opportunity, and what’s called the social safety net. She was a leader in the call for more stringent banking regulation after the 2007-2008 financial crisis and played a key role in the birth of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  Warren’s fearless style also triggered the “Nevertheless, she persisted” meme when she was silenced by Mitch McConnell during the Jeff Sessions hearings, after she sought to read a letter from Coretta Scott King. As she now digs in during her quest to be the Democratic nominee for president, we hope she has a time for some birthday celebrations with husband Bruce Mann, a Harvard Law professor, and her two children.

We wish these amazing and aging boldly women a very happy start to their eight decade on earth!
