The (Next)Tribe Has Spoken: Here are the Beauty Habits That are Working For Us at Midlife

Best Beauty Habits at Midlife: What's Working for Our Tribe | NextTribe

We asked and the tribe has spoken—and you had some pretty enlightening things to say about what beauty tips are (and aren’t) working for you now. In a survey we posted a couple weeks ago, you loyal readers shared your best beauty habits and other intel—from how many products you’re using to what celebs you look up to as beauty icons (Helen Mirren, Cindy Gallop, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren—did we mention Helen Mirren?).

A big take-away? We’re not spending a huge amount of time on beauty. About 46 percent of you responded you spend 30 total minutes a day on grooming. And that’s the whole shebang: Combined makeup, hair, skincare for morning and night on a routine day. And while 46 percent of us claim to spend more time on beauty than 20 years ago, some (12 percent, to be exact) are doing less.

One thing we can’t seem to live without? Mascara. 48 percent of NextTribers won’t leave the house without it—and that’s saying a lot considering sunscreen came in second place. This particular segment of the questionnaire perplexed NextTribe’s editor-in-chief, Jeannie Ralston, who hates mascara and only wears it when she absolutely has to because she hates taking it off at night.
We’re loving that a good chunk of our readers have found a cut that you can just towel dry, comb and go (gotta love a low-maintenance style), but also dig the fact 39 percent of y’all are still partial to a good ol’ fashioned blow dry and hot rollers. We also asked everyone to pony up the details on what their most vexing age-related beauty problem is, and saggy skin beat out wrinkles by a whopping 22 percent. (Thinning eyebrows and skin discoloration came in a distant third and fourth, respectively.) As far as hair issues, your thinning follicles was more perplexing than a graying mane.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our survey! It let us get to know you more and will help us drum up even more beauty content for you in the future.

Your Face, Skin and Hair at Midlife: What’s Working for You?

When I was in college, running around getting ready for a date, my friend used to quote her mom’s advice on the subject of make up. “A little blush, a little lipstick and you’ll be fine.” That worked well then, but as my 20s became my 30s, 40s and now 50s, my make up routine has changed dramatically.
